Which bars did you wind up ordering? Different bars front and rear?

Went ahead and got the Hotchkis set. I'll run the rear full soft to start, maybe find an OEM nismo to change to later.

SPOHN 07-06-2013 03:58 PM

Hotchkis med setting is best. Remember the cage is going to stiffen things a lot. But I guess with all mods there subjective to owners opinions.

ChrisSlicks 07-07-2013 08:11 AM

I usually run the Hotchkis at medium rear also, at least with race tires, stiff damper settings and dry track. For a wet setup the soft setting would be ideal.

Sh0velMan 07-10-2013 08:18 AM

Well the sway bars are back-ordered 3 weeks. So blah.

Sh0velMan 07-10-2013 09:05 AM

And the fabricator is still waiting on the dies for the tube bender to come in...

He does mostly drag racing and some circle track, where apparently the material of choice is 1.5" 4130, so he never had a reason to get 1.75" dies.

Sh0velMan 07-16-2013 02:42 PM

So my builder is going to do some stitch welding of this structure:

http://www.the370z.com/attachments/m...ar_bracing.jpg

He's also thinking we'll be leaving the factory cross brace in the car.

I figure it weighs less than 5 pounds and definitely adds some cross-chassis rigidity. It'll be sitting behind the harness bar, so it won't interfere there...

Should be interesting.

DR_ 07-16-2013 03:32 PM

Caution, lots of racing classes don't allow stitch welding. Do you know what club and what class you are going to race in?

Sh0velMan 07-16-2013 05:25 PM

That's many years away. Not going to worry about that for now.

To clarify what I mean since I'm not on my phone now...

I won't be worrying about club racing or NASA TT/Solo 1 for several years on.

For now, I'll be doing track days and Autocross with BMWCCA/PCA and MAYBE the odd SCCA SOLO II event.

If it becomes an issue in the front where I need to not have the stitch welds, I'll get in there and cut them all.

The fittings are probably gonna go, just thought I'd throw them on there and see how it looked.

Really dumb question but what is it for?

Sh0velMan 07-21-2013 03:04 PM

It's an in-tank surge tank. A first draft design for one, anyway.

Looks like a device for a new Saw movie.

lol...

anyway this tank is just a design exercise, it would never fit inside the stock tank (opening is too small) without cutting the tank open.

Just getting my head around the modelling software.

DR_ 07-22-2013 10:30 AM

The stock fuel pump has a little surge like fuel holding area on top that is obviously not adequate. I wonder if there is a way to make it hold twice the volume there and if that would fix the issue without the complexity of a separate fuel pump and surge tank.

I think it only holds like half a cup of fuel. I suspect that if you double or tripled the capacity, it might help some in certain situations, but I don't think anything short of additional pickups or a (comparatively) huge surge capacity is going to make it starve proof down to empty.

So I'm exploring those options, additional pickups with inexpensive lift pumps and/or a huge surge capacity.

Well my fabricator was going to start selling these as a weld-in kit (there's going to be a rear strut tower brace, too) but it sounds like he's gonna be closing up shop at the end of August :(

sig11 07-31-2013 04:53 PM

Pretty welds.

wstar 08-01-2013 09:14 AM

^ Yes, much prettier than I could ever do. I hate having to put an asterisk on "I did it all myself", but welding up the rollcage is something I'm gonna have to farm out to someone who knows what they're doing :)

Well, current word on the shop building mine is that he will continue to do fabrication work in his garage @ home (apparently has an enormous garage) and will probably offer my cage for sale as a "you weld it" arrangement with the main hoop done and you just take it somewhere to get it welded in.

No word on pricing yet tho.

Also, getting there:

Sway bars shipped finally!

UPS says they land Monday. Sucks it isn't Friday! lol

Sh0velMan 08-02-2013 02:14 PM

Car is back in my possession with cage installed.

Pics once I get it prepped for paint and painted successfully... it's gross right now.

I know right, only took nearly a year...

When're you doing some more modding? Gotta bring'er over man.

Hopefully in October I'll have some time to install my oil cooler, oil pressure gauge and NST pulleys. Oil cooler just in time for cold weather .

If we can get an install-fest organized sometime around then I could definitely use your expertise on the pulley! Getting the stocker off seems like a real test.
