so the car hasn't been started after you dropped it at the garage ?

because from what I remember the oil pressure gauge is connected via CAN with the main cluster then to the ECU and the electrical flow path goes from the passenger side wiring harness. and not the driver one which is mainly for the ABS/brake booster/lighting aera.

travisjb 02-23-2014 09:32 AM

I'm using an aftermarket oil pressure gauge with a dedicated pressure sensor...

It has not been started yet

It is possible there is something deeper involved. We're going to address the harness first, then we'll see!

wstar 02-23-2014 11:01 AM

Seems like the low oil flasher came on pretty much simultaneously with the engine dying. Engines make zero oil pressure at zero RPM, and hot oil at very very low RPM in the last split second of engine life might've had naturally low pressure, too. I bet after the wiring harness is fixed you're fine, especially given you had some cool-down time while the engine was dying. Good luck!

travisjb 02-23-2014 11:22 AM

Thanks! think / hope you're right

SPOHN 02-23-2014 07:28 PM

Yes I have no fender liners. I will be double checking that. Great video Travis I will be watching this a lot. Still going over my videos. My best time as of far is 1:46. I'm just happy to get threw the first weekend in 10 months with a hole different car.

Also nice to meet you again.

travisjb 02-23-2014 07:37 PM

That's a respectable time and I saw you out there consistently passing cars at start/finish, and moving your braking point downfield at turn 1. Nice driving!

Great to meet you and your dad! I owe you guys some beers for helping to push my z back in the trailer.

Mike 02-23-2014 08:20 PM

That was Sharif you were following. Glad to hear its probably just a harness. Spohn told me you had troubles.

Going to NASA next month?

travisjb 02-23-2014 08:27 PM

hey mike. not sure what my next track event will be - really want to get back to VIR to see how the new pavement works out... will miss the chin event in two weeks, unfortunately

carlitos_370z 02-24-2014 06:02 AM

Damn travis good runs bro!!! sorry to hear about the mechanical problems that you have!!!

wstar 02-24-2014 08:02 AM

So, what's the tradeoff on removing the fender liners? (well, aside from the now-obvious wiring caveat!). I hadn't considered it before. Better airflow around the brakes, but you get some more splash into the bay on wet track days? Doesn't screw up radiator airflow or general aerodynamics?

travisjb 02-24-2014 07:45 PM

Hey Brandon. I don't recommend removing them for the reasons you state relating to preserving oem flow through radiator and also because less airflow around the tires = less drag. Best to avoid for those and other reasons. In my case, reasons we removed because remove/replace choir was a PITA, were wearing them out, had been hacking them up for mods like 3" brake ducts and others constantly anyways, and a lot of the front end was redone so OE attach points gone, relocated, etc. They were hanging on for dear life and put them out of their misery.

travisjb 02-24-2014 07:46 PM

Gracias, Carlitos!

carlitos_370z 02-25-2014 04:57 AM

 i hope to run my car like you someday bro hhahaha!!

Megan370z 03-04-2014 07:14 PM

Hey, hows the engine ?
We havent got any new since it died while being on the track

travisjb 03-04-2014 07:25 PM

Running. CIN thinks it was a mfgr defect in the battery causing havoc with electrical system. PC680.

Wiring harnesses also reconstructed and re-routed so no longer at risk of contacting tires.

SPOHN 03-04-2014 07:59 PM

I can tell you first hand how the battery plays hell with the cars electrical system. Same battery too. But it's got to be fully charged and ready. I keep a spare with me.

Just wanted to post up and say I'm at page 30 of your blog. This is great stuff, your blog just saved me a huge head ache from accidentally buying a wrong part for the 370. Happy to follow this. Currently putting pennies in the bank to do a full suspension build.

to many pages...what are you using your rear side vents for? ill continue to look.

travisjb 03-29-2014 09:15 AM

^ currently they feed tubes from each side through a chamber with air-oil heat exchange unit for rear diff cooling, then exit out the rear license plate area... at some point, i may split the air and feed some down to rear brakes. have also contemplated using some of the air for driver cooling

Luciano13 03-29-2014 11:21 AM

Where did u get your side vents??
Im thinkin of doing the same with my bumper but for CAI filters that r located pretty much where your vents are......

Btw the Z looks wicked:tiphat:

travisjb 03-29-2014 11:58 AM

custom fab aluminum

recommend you look at naca ducts, much more efficient

and thanks!

O ok. My coolers under the car with a solid ramp up kinda thing that catches any air down there and sends it through the cooler. So I guess ill just do rear brakes then. Thanks.

Time for this thread to come full circle.

Not putting in enough track days anymore and I think someone else may get more use out of the car... Serious thinking about selling the Z... where's market value? I want to be fair and get this done within a month or two. Thoughts?

synolimit 02-24-2015 11:09 PM

Please sell wing!!

Rusty 02-25-2015 05:29 AM

Hate to see this happen. :( You've been at this a long time. Reading your thread. I got a lot of info from it. :D But like you said. Everything comes full circle. :(

Megan370z 02-25-2015 11:32 AM

It sad to see everyone go one after one...

enjoy your next project if you do sell the Z !

I've kind of been thinking the same, but for different reasons. So many nice affordable supercars like C7 and 911, but can't justify buying any of them if I'm not going to track them and have a dedicated track car.

Mike 02-25-2015 10:50 PM

which actually seems like it might be the same reasons.

Rusty 02-25-2015 11:01 PM

The Cayman GT4 is nice. But $$$$ after you add everything up on them. I thought about one too, along with a few others.

sig11 02-26-2015 05:20 PM

Did they fix the oil starvation issues the old Cayman had? That spurred a friend into trading his for a 911 and buying a C5 for the track. :P

travisjb 02-26-2015 05:41 PM

My plan is to sell trailer and Z (and possibly Tundra) and replace with on occasional street car that I can take to the track 4-6 times a year with no mods - just brake fluid and a second set of tires. That's why I think the GT4 makes sense for me... I've also toyed with the idea of getting a much lower priced Focus RS, but want to see how it does on the track first. In any event, I'm getting frequent updates from my local Porsche dealer as he searches. Nothing yet, trying to convince me to consider GTS but I won't have it!

So, any thoughts on how I price & market this Z? Chuck em out there, or maybe send me a PM please! Thanks!!

Expecting about $95K out the door... it is rather steep and I'm going to have to start buying track day insurance for sure.

Think so. Hope so! As with GT3, GT4 includes integrated dry-sump lubrication and on-demand electronically controlled oil pump.

Mike 02-28-2015 02:13 PM

I instructed a guy in a brand new Cayman GTS yesterday, awesome car.

travisjb 02-28-2015 05:14 PM

^ Bet it is... The GTS would be sublime - but I'm looking for a little more of a rough edge

And both my neighbors across the street got '15 GT3s... the only way I can think to 1-up on my budget is to get a GT4 :)

travisjb 03-01-2015 07:44 PM
