FYI... dropped the car off with my mech yesterday... may have back by weekend

I'm likely to purchase a data acquisition system with camera... here's what I'm looking at:

1) SmartyCam from Aim Sports... announced, but not yet released... no price yet
http://www.smartycam.com/index_eng.htm

2) TraqMate complete + Chase Cam... ~$2K package... seamless data / video + simple onboard display
Traqmate.com GPS Data Acquisition
Racer Kit, Single Camera Package | ChaseCam

I'll buy through Sharif if I go with option 2

Input on these would be welcomed!

UPDATE: JUST ORDERED OPTION B THROUGH SHARIF... WILL TRY TO INSTALL FIRST WEEK OF MAY

Good for a baseline run... I'd have been not pleased if it were lower than my first motor at 270!... different dyno, different day, but still !

UPDATED: APPARENTLY, THEY DID NOT HAVE THE CORRECT WEIGHT SETTINGS FOR THE CAR... RE-RAN THREE TIMES, CAME IN BETWEEN 273 AND 275...

RCZ 04-22-2009 11:37 AM

Cool, what kind if dyno is it again? DJ?

Update... Little progress on the installs today, but I've decided on wheels / tires (I THINK !)... going with old style Advan RS + Toyo R888s... here's a pic I grabbed off the photoshop thread of what it should look like

http://www.the370z.com/members/koojo...ense-plate.jpg

I have a few requests out for quotes, any vendors that read this are welcome to drop me a quote... 18x9, 18x10 with 29 and 25 offsets... 265 and 285 Toyos

NA&CH 04-23-2009 07:19 AM

Can't go wrong with Advan :D Loved my RGII's.

If you get the RS's make sure you get the GTR face ones with the concave look. Those would look amazing. Good wheel choice.

EVOMS makes sick porsches. Their CGT makes me poop my pants.

Thanks for the advice, will try for those... It's hard to find a set of these with the right offset in gun metal... Sharif is searching around for me

Travis, I don't see new brake rotors or at least pads on your list, are you planning on sticking with the stock set? The reason I ask is, as you probably know, some people have experienced issues tracking the Z with the stock brakes, such as Edmunds.

travisjb 04-24-2009 10:30 AM

Forgot that ! I have already installed Hawk HP+ pads... going to use the stock rotors until I burn through them, then may switch to DBA5000s upon the advice of RCZ

I did not experience fade during my runs at PIR, however, my runs were shortened due to engine oil overheating, so no telling if they would have started fading after 20 mins or so... we'll see

The HP+ pads are a little harsh for driving around town by the way... you have to adjust how you use the pedal a bit

Not to mention they are noisy and create truck loads of brake dust. :)

I swap back to the OEM pads between track days.

miguez 04-24-2009 01:01 PM

Nice, I didn't know DBA rotors, just looked them up, not a bad price! Especially considering the Brembos are so incredibly expensive! I believe in "You get what you par for", but in that case you may be paying a little over what you get just so that the caliper says those 6 famous letters...

Have you decided if you'd keep the original calipers? I am wondering if some of the scoring issues people have reported when tracking the stock brakes would go away with the Hawk HP+ or similar pads.

travisjb 04-24-2009 01:09 PM

yes, I will be using the OE rotors at the track... will let you know soon enough !

You do realize that site has em for 460 EACH side? as in per corner?

Yes you do get what you pay for, dba's are very good.

miguez 04-24-2009 03:34 PM

Yep, I do, although what I may have misunderstood was the price of the brembos. I forgot the price I looked at for the brembos included the calipers which, based on the rotors alone, is the vast majority of the price.

So, sounds like rotor-wise the DBAs might be more expensive than brembos, huh?

NA&CH 04-24-2009 04:15 PM

DBA rotors are awesome. Just looked back at the list. Nice list of parts man. Cant wait to see the rims you pic :D

Travis,
You asked about data acquisition experience. I have none with the products you mentioned but have used the Mychron Pista MXL. Nice system but it lacks GPS and requires a beacon.

travisjb 04-24-2009 06:19 PM

thanks, yeah, i've heard good things about mychron and lots of guys in phoenix use them... thought the pista was for karting... in any event, I orderd the chasecam + traqmate from sharif and will update on it later

fyi all, just changed my mind (AGAIN!) on wheels... going to go with 18" forgestars c/o our friend mike at ddm ! starting a group buy thread here... unbelievably good deal http://www.the370z.com/tires-wheels/...html#post62624

rreign 04-25-2009 10:20 AM

Hey Travis, I've been looking around and reading through this thread like a car bible. Have you taken any video of your Z since the installation of everything? If so, where can I find it? I really want to hear it. I haven't gotten a Z yet, but I've been looking into all the performance parts and I'm going Stillen FTW. That's why I'm so interested in this thread.

travisjb 04-25-2009 10:48 AM

Most of the install is being done next week, and I have a track weekend next weekend, so rreign I'll be in a better position to tell you how it is all adding up and maybe take some video then. When you go buy your new Nissan - tell them you want them to put an oil cooler in ! :)

miguez 04-25-2009 11:06 AM

And he's going to let us know about the Hawk HP+ pads on stock rotors too :):):). Thanks Travis, you give everyone an awesome goal to aim for!

I have already tracked with the Hawk HP+ on the stock rotors and they worked great. :)

miguez 04-25-2009 12:46 PM

Ah, cool DDM (don't know your name :)), and you had the oil cooler, so your track experience wasn't just 5 or 10 minutes, right? I was hoping the rotor scoring problem was due to the pad, and not the rotor (as is usually the case), so it sounds like that's confirmed!

Did you by any chance do any bedding-in with the Hawks?

Yeah I was on the track for 20 minutes at a time. I bed them in the first session at the track. I did a write up somewhere about my experience at the time attack and my thoughts on all of the parts.

I am stoked man. Can't wait to see the overall. I have been reading through everything I can and I think I noticed a big trend with dealers not wanting to put the oil cooler in. You got any tips for getting them to do it? I don't even have the car yet and I already have a full wishlist on Stillen's site. You think if I buy everything at once (CBE,HFCs,Headers,CAI,Pulleys, etc) I can get a deal or some kind of discount?

travisjb 04-26-2009 11:12 AM

we don't discuss prices on the board... but generally yes the more you buy the more discount you can get from any vendor... g/l !

rreign 04-26-2009 12:14 PM

Thanks, I appreciate the info. Oh and thanks for the heads up on not letting prices out with other competitors and what not

imag 04-26-2009 10:56 PM

Really digging this build log.

I'm not trying to be a jerk - I'm just curious - considering a lot of the stuff you're buying and the cars intended purpose on the track, why didn't you just get a base 'vette with a Z51 package?

It seems like then you'd have more horsepower and much less weight at a similar cost to what you're spending. Obviously I like the way the Z looks, along with the interior and some other things - but for a pure track car, it's tough to beat the 'vette for the money...

travisjb 04-30-2009 09:50 PM

thanks for your note... I actually did consider a vette... bondurant school is ~10 mins from my house and they were recently selling 2 year old school cars for $11k for base and $14k for z06 ! Trouble is, you can definitely end up with f'd up cars bent frame etc that way... but some folks definitely got great beater cars for the track

I like this car... it's that simple... like the way it drives, like the people that drive them, just don't like the way it cools oil ! ;) I will keep it street legal for at least 1 year, then after that we'll see

travisjb 05-01-2009 10:17 PM

Some updates...

Got the car back from the shop... we had to re-run the baseline dyno, it was done with the wrong settings first time around, so it pulled 273-275 over three runs... calling it 274... will post pic later

As you can see below, a number of projects are done... stillen exahust sounds great ! my mechanic was cursing nissan for the drivers side stock manifold bolts and stillen for the PIA to get the y pipe installed, but we both agreed it sounds terrific ! I'll be posting videos, pics etc later...

Also, no 2nd dyno until I get the underdrive pulley and a few other bits done.

I'm still sitting at only 720 miles on odo, and only about 250 on new motor, so I'm going to have to go for a serious drive tomorrow to get some break in miles on the car before track event on sunday... on sunday, will probably only push it 80%, but aiming for one good hot lap to establish baseline

miguez 05-02-2009 09:15 AM

Hey Travis,

Great to hear you got the car back, and that you like the mods!

What did your car originally make on the dyno, with the wrong settings?

Thanks,

travisjb 05-02-2009 09:23 AM

277
