need a 90mm inlet though... anyone seen one of those ?

Fathead 02-10-2010 06:32 PM

Bring it back here is what the car looks like so far. Getting rid of the steering column junk, and removing the pass. side seat mounts saved another 12.7 lbs. I still dont know what the car weighs but I would be willing to bet its gonna be the lightest 370 around with out using carbon fiber parts.

Wow, that's stripped!

travisjb 02-10-2010 08:01 PM

wonder if we should get rid of the e-brake???

Fathead 02-10-2010 09:00 PM

No, get rid of the head lights and make an aluminum single exhaust.

travisjb 02-10-2010 09:43 PM

I'll call you about all that... still thinking about the headlights

nice work, junior! great progress...

footwork will come much easier now! is there enough room there to get at the clutch w/o accidentally clipping the dead pedal? just need to double check that

travisjb 02-12-2010 12:01 AM

junior, forgot to mention, the adjustable column mount looks like a solid piece! can't wait to try that out and post impressions

hey, so who can make a rear diffuser like this one? extends all the way under the rear wheels and creates some real downforce? need this!

Dang! Travis - the car looks awesome! I gotta check it out when you're done

travisjb 02-12-2010 10:47 AM

Thanks, Ken. Nice to hear from you... I *WILL* have this car at the next NASA PIR event, even if I have to pedal it ! lol... March 6/7 as you prob know

Okay, I'll bite... could have bought someone's used race car and that would have been cheaper but I would not have been able to enjoy seeing the car come together one piece at a time... In addition, most come with lots of unknowns and mechanical issues that need to be sorted out, and you may get a car with a bent frame etc. And wouldn't have been *that* much less expensive, assuming I targeted the same level of performance... I could have bought an American muscle car but I don't like the way they drive. I have 4 full days in a 2008 corvette at bondurant, and I was not impressed - just not for me. I could have bought another Porsche, was originally planning on a 2003-4 996 C2 conversion but that would have been boring! Those cars are everywhere and it would never have been as 'good' as the many GT3 / cup cars. The Z has the element of surprise at the track - no one knows what times it will turn - in fact I find that a lot of ppl underestimate it... My total build cost is less than if I had started with a used Porsche... and less than if I had bought a new factory Ford Mustang racecar... and I'm confident I have a faster, more reliable, safer track car

Re why new... how many used 370Z's were available in Feb 2009?

The cost of operation of this car is low as well... I can pick up a rear diff for about $1k... can't say that about a porsche!!!

Well said Travis

Just a heads up; I took my car to Willow last Friday and had all kinds of issues. Hard starting, getting codes not getting codes, car wouldn't accelerate over 3500 rpm, would die while idling and all with a full tank of gas. Didn't even get on the track.

We took it in to Fontana Nissan and it turns out that the crank shaft position sensor overheated and melted the sensor. I have a new one coming under warranty. I'll have them protect it with a heat shield of some kind.

Anyway Travis, you guys might want to take a look see at yours and protect it with some kind of heat shield or tape.

Fontana Nissan ROCKS! Great customer service :tiphat:

ChrisSlicks 02-16-2010 03:53 PM

The sensor is mostly plastic, it's going to take some creativity to shield it from the surrounding engine heat. Even so I've never heard of one melting before, pretty weird.

Big thanks for the heads up!.... nice for someone else to 'find' one of these issues first for a change! lol ... and sorry to hear about the rough day! do you have a 'freeze frame' of the codes you picked up? i'm curious if there are other issues... the 3,500 cutoff sounds remarkably like a temp sensor issue - same for oil temp

Junior- any ideas on how to shield it?

Fathead 02-17-2010 09:26 AM

I ll look at it this morning. That is some serious heat to melt one of thoes!

Zless@arizona 02-17-2010 10:32 PM

Do you have pictures of the sensor's location, or can you describe its location? To melt, it must be located externally, close to an exhaust component...

travisjb 02-17-2010 11:45 PM

wonder if we can get this C6 rear diffuser to fit on the Z ? they claim significant downforce on the corvettte... anyone know how close the dimensions are between the two cars ?

You might want to give Fontana Nissan a call and ask for Chris who works on the race cars. Don't know his last name. Mention the blue race car and they'll get you to him.

He said it was a poor design and he also said he was going to shield it for me. He's a great guy who loves what he does. I'm sure he'll help you out.

My '07 Z is still in the shop ( new forged motor ) otherwise I could measure it for you but the vette has a big butt and I doubt it would fit even with some cutting. The 370 Z's butt is more rounded on the bottom where as the vette's is more square.

Just a quick observation.

I'm with you :iagree: Someone needs to come up with this aftermarket for the 370. All we have right now is EVO's carbon fiber piece. Stillen or someone needs to do this for us

Yup... credit to Lou Fusz's team for tracking this down for me! And at the end of it all, there were some folks in Nissan USA working hard as well, so I have no hard feelings there at all... It is a rather obscure part for a very new model - they weren't planning to replace one of these... Now fingers crossed that the right part shows up!

UPDATE: visited the car tonight... we took off over 55 pounds of exhaust from the behind the y-pipe!!! will replace that with 5 lbs of muffler and maybe 5 lbs of alum 3" pipe on one side, for a savings of 40+ lbs !

I will be selling the Stillen HFCs (replaced with strt pipes), and Stillen cat-back... I think 50% of current Stillen pricing is fair considering I haven't put more than a couple hundred miles on them... first come, first serve!

travisjb 02-19-2010 11:30 PM

Take a look at the new corvette gt2 car for ALMS... notice the placement of the trans cooler at the rear? Looks like they have a large fan to draw air through as well... not sure where they pull the air from - any ideas? I'm thinking about doing something like this for my Z... carve out the indented area where the rear license plate currently lives and add a screen on the outside... on the inside, create a housing for two cores, one for trannie, one for diff... then feed air through the side scoops via hoses inside the rear hatch... Just an idea at this stage, going to have to do some more research and mock it up
