I think they're being marketed as 4K capable or something, but not sure how that's gonna work.

The games will not be in 4k. This time around you get native 1080p for your games. Welcome to 8 years ago on the pc. The consoles are going to be capable of upconverting bluray movies from 1080p to 4K at some point in the future. Consoles are so uninspiring in their design. I get why they do it and all but it really sucks that they never try to push the envelope, just play it safe because their afraid hardware will get too expensive for the masses.

Thats just the thing, most consumers dont want to spend $500 on consoles even if they had PC type components that were "better"

People were paying $600 for the PS3 when it first launched. I was one of them

sh1t, I wouldn't spend $600 on a video game system... hell naw.

I had the day off work yesterday so I stopped by Best Buy and had my first sit down in front of some 4K screens. Wow. The difference is easily the same type of jump in detail going from standard def to 1080p HD. The prices were expensive for sure, they had the $25K 84" Sony on the wall and it was beautiful, but you can get a 55" for $3.5K which seems pretty reasonable to me. Still more than I'm willing to spend on a TV right now but I'm starting to get an itch....
|
Ohh bro, you and I both, i did the same thing on sunday, I just had to see it, Im totally sold on it, albeit, it is new technology, I'd say if we waited the prices will come down. I also asked the sales rep, for someone that had several blu ray movies, what would need to be done to play those movies in that resolution. He said you'd have to purchase an upconverting player which was pretty expensive as well..
So me personally, I want that type of TV, but Im gonna wait on it.. |

Honestly, at $800, I'm building something myself for a whole range of reasons, particularly because I'm interested in customization when you are talking about that level of $$. There's also some interesting dynamics that come into play at various points. A $400-500 console sees a lot of mass-production effect, and probably compares more directly to a $600 computer. An $800 console might look like an $850 computer, which doesn't exactly make a compelling case. |
