Does anyone know how to Build a Go Kart

This is gonna be my summer project.
Im planning on using a 250cc motorcycle engine.
with a mean body design. any suggestions will be takin into consideration.
Maybe ill make a mini z hahahaha:happydance::driving::tup::stirthepot::sti rthepot::stirthepot::stirthepot:

kenchan 04-29-2014 10:17 AM

How mechanically inclined are you? Can you weld? If not, just buy a kart with a busted motor and do the swap. Building a tube frame for it may be a challenge if this is your first time getting into fabbing stuff up.

Minsu 04-29-2014 10:24 AM

"mini z", its z related.

Well my dad taught me how to weld some time ago, so i gotta brush up on it. I wanted to use a steel square frame for the chassis, a bit easier to manipulate. Im only concerned with the bike engine and how to fabricate it to 4 wheels instead of 2. As well as a proper brake and suspension so i dont die. and then the rest is molded ABS plastic for the body work. Any other suggestions will help.

kenchan 04-29-2014 10:28 AM

... you might be better off just buying one pre-made... and mod that.

Minsu 04-29-2014 10:29 AM

The steering is confusing me as well. I dont want it to be a trike, so a parallel bike motor compared to an inline? Confused.

Go to a kart store and see how they're sending power to the rears. It's most likely a belt or chain drive around a sprocket on the rear axle. Brakes are easy- it's just hydraulics. Go junkyard hunting and grab four calipers and the mc from a pre-abs car. Then just bend and flare some hardlines and have some ss lines made. Just steal the suspension design from the karts you're looking at for drive solutions.

Just get an Ariel Atom.

A rack and pinion and a steering column from a non-power steering car should work, but you may have to have the ends cut down and re-welded.

Go check out the circle/dirt track racing section on summit racing's website. You might find all that you need there for most of your project.

That could pose a problem.

Chuck33079 04-29-2014 10:40 AM

You need to make sure you're absolutely confident in your fabbing abilities. You're throwing a lot more power at a kart than they usually have. It's going to be quick. If your welds fail or something lets go you may end up fabbing your own wheelchair.

Minsu 04-29-2014 10:46 AM

hmmm, and just putting attention to detail wont be enough here?

kenchan 04-29-2014 10:48 AM

no, i think you should seriously buy one that is pre-made and just mod it to your liking...

I think that if you're asking how to do this, it's too big a project to have as your first big DIY.

Minsu 04-29-2014 10:54 AM

hmmm if i buy a premade one its only gonna have 8-10HP?
could i buy a premade one, engine swap? probably not cause im going to need stronger supplement parts right?
damn, how do i go about doing this.

speedfreek 04-29-2014 10:57 AM

You could buy a T-Rex. It has a motorcycle engine.

Minsu 04-29-2014 10:57 AM

t-rex is like 30k lol

Minsu 04-29-2014 10:58 AM

correction 60k

Minsu 04-29-2014 10:59 AM

Anyone close by me wanna help me lol, ill supply parts but we put it together.

Right, buy a premade one and pull out the motor and swap it. You'll have some fitment hurdles, but far less than making your own. And then you'll have to start finding the weak links as no one can help you with that until you find the issues.

speedfreek 04-29-2014 11:01 AM

Used? Quick search found this beauty in orange for $7,800 in FL.

This^^^^^ Having raced them for years I wouldn't trust many people to weld up a frame for a "go-Kart" with a 250cc motor. I hit over 110 on mine on a race track, no way would I trust that to many people. If you were doing a more reasonable motor then maybe, but you are talking a shifter kart........They haul ***.

Chuck33079 04-29-2014 11:04 AM

This may be a good place to look for the brake and suspension parts you'll need to upgrade on an existing kart once you put way too much power to it.

gomer_110 04-29-2014 11:41 AM

Best bet is to find an old formula SAE car. While a little larger than a normal kart, they would be more in line with what you're trying to do. The one from where I went to school used the motor out of a CBR 600 fwiw.

I'm drooling, I wanted to use about two grand for parts though :( cheap I know

Chuck33079 04-29-2014 11:43 AM

So something really fast, built by inexperienced hands and using cheap parts? Was your goal to become a Darwin award recipient?

kenchan 04-29-2014 11:44 AM

can you even buy a 49cc new for $2k? :ugh: bicycles cost more $ lol

Minsu 04-29-2014 11:45 AM

Well the bike motor isn't all that expensive and I didn't think the supplement parts would go over 1.5 k chassis metal included

Minsu 04-29-2014 11:46 AM

Ppl sell there bike motor for 500 -1.5k 50cc to.250 cc

Chuck33079 04-29-2014 11:49 AM

The motor is probably going to be one of the cheaper parts. You don't know how to build a chassis, so you need to buy a kart with a busted motor. Then you need to swap the motor and see what other parts fail. This isn't a tight budget project if you want to do it right. If you want to rig up some dangerous POS that comes apart at speed, go right ahead. We know how you feel about taking advice :rofl2:

kittens 04-29-2014 11:50 AM

If that T Rex for 7800 is real I want it lol I coulda sworn they were 30k and up easy

I would be hesitant at that price. It may come in a box of parts but the OP wanted to build one so thought it may be of some interest.

As someone who has raced karts for 8 years, lemme just tell you that this is a bad idea...

Daveski38 04-29-2014 12:19 PM

Need to research shifter karts

100 to 125cc is all you need

Friend raced a non-shifter kart....105mph in the straights

I bet you can buy a perfectly good Go Kart at the track. Somebody is getting out or wants to upgrade. They tend to go cheaply vs new. Building a Go Kart might be better after owning one and knowing more about what you like and need.

Cool idea never the less.

1adam12 04-29-2014 12:27 PM

I would like to build a Space Shuttle but have no experience with Aerospace Engineering but if someone on here works for NASA it would be great if you stopped by and gave me a few tips. :stirthepot:
