Tom Clancy - Threat Vector - amazingly it's about Russia taking over Crimea. The details are different (Russian FSB uses organized crime as secret agents, etc vs real life Russian soldiers in unmarked uniforms) but the overall thrust plays out just like it has in real life over the past couple of months.

I've bought and tried reading "Mein Kampf", "Origin Of Species", and several other "historically important" books. Get the Cliff's Notes. ;)

I have Origin of the Species on my Kindle. Also, The Road to Serfdom. Never seem to get around to reading them.

Love my Kindle!! well.....my kindle app at least. I read mostly on my ipad mini.

Last book I read for pleasure was No Easy Day. A story about the tracking and killing of Bin Laden.

I read a ton of stuff all the time for my work. Research and stuff on stocks.

I am also an endurance sports enthusiast and coach, I read a lot of stuff for that too. Right now I'm re-reading Racing Weight, and reading Born To Run (which is more of a story about the Tarahumara and the Leadville Ultra Marathon).

A must read if you're interested in Al Qaeda and Bin Laden is "The Looming Tower" by Lawrence Wright. It's the history of Al Qaeda going back to the early days in Egypt and through the days of the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan up to 9/11 and beyond. A great read. I prefer non-fiction usually but this reads like a novel. Hard to put down.

Wright also wrote "Going Clear". It's an investigation of the inner workings of Scientology. Another great read and hard to put down.

I just finished reading "To Conquer Hell," about America's involvement in the Argonne Forest offensive in WW1. The beginning had a brief history of General Pershing up to the time we declared war on Germany in 1917. Pretty harrowing.

Those are the kind of books that make you realize how pussified we've gotten since then. I spent some time with a WW2 vet over the weekend and those generations were some hard motherfuckers.

edit- motherfuckers isn't censored?

That's exactly how hardcore those motherfuckers are.. the system can't even censor it.

Our troops today have some horrible **** to deal with, but the guys in WW1 were fighting in trenches. Holy ****. I'm not even sure I can wrap my head around how brutal that was.

The real problem is the DoD is pussifying our soldiers by coddling them. :shakes head:

I think it's more of an issue with society in general than a military-specific issue, but I'm a civilian so I don't know my *** from a hole in the ground.

This is way off topic here, but I'm in it and I see what is going on. I think society is influencing it, but when soldiers can't be made to feel "uncomfortable" by a superior NCO or officer (and I mean uncomfortable like corrective action, not akward) the system has gone soft. You can ask any current NCO and they'll tell you that they've taken any and all training tools away from NCOs. :shakes head:

God forbid the guys we're tuning into ******* warriors get their tender feeling hurt. The guy I hung out with this weekend was in a B-29 over the pacific. I'll ask him if they ever cared about his feelings or self esteem. :rofl2:

real men don't have feels..

You're not kidding. Not only that, but machine guns and high explosives were new, and our leadership didn't know how to tactically deal with them. France was a ******* meat-grinder. Some of the stories quoted from soldiers in the book will make you **** your pants.
