Honda kills NSX

Quote:

Honda has cancelled the new NSX as part of a radical restructuring of its car making business.

The V10-engined supercar, which was a direct challenge to Ferrari and Porsche, would have been the most powerful production car that the company had ever produced.

Honda CEO Takeo Fukui announced the move in his end of year speech, saying that all development of the car would be cancelled. The company has also withdrawn its plan to introduce the Acura brand to Japan in 2010.

The Honda boss had previously emphasised the importance of the NSX to Honda's brand, unequivocally telling Autocar at the end of last year: "The new supercar is necessary for Honda."

Fukui had decided to concentrate on Honda's environmental credentials. He believes that hybrid drivetrains offer "the most realistic path for CO2 reduction at this moment". This means that Honda will focus its energy on developing hybrid technologies and "achieving mass market penetration as soon as possible".

The cancellation of the Honda NSX will come as a bitter disappointment to fans of the old model, which finally went off sale in 2005, after 15 years in production.

WOW. Good find. Guess the GT-R will reign supreme in Japan...

This sucks...

I'm actually surprised that he made this speech because I had heard that it was kiboshed quite a while ago. Same with the Lexus LF-A concept. Is the LF-A still happening?

its dead too. Godzilla is king

well the car was going to be like a 150K plus car. not like a 80K GT-R (not like thats cheap) but im sure the marketability in the global economy had something to do with it. just like that lexus LF-A was going to be over 200K. you know 150-200K for hondas and toyotas is a hard sale. im sure there would be a niche market for it but i couldnt see either being a money maker.

what i dont get his both the NSX and LF-A had working prototypes that were Very far in to development. that looks like sooooo much wasted R&D, think about the $ put into it to be shelved

Definately... i remember first hearing about the new NSX about at least more than a yr ago...so much must have been invested in it.
but i just wish at the very least why don't they just release a 70k-80K NSX, just improvements over the going model.
that would be very feasible IMO...but then again, they did pull out of F1 and Subaru also pulled out of WRC....

Money is def. tight everywhere..

:(

that's too bad....oh well

jetnoirZ 12-18-2008 06:51 PM

that really is sad. No way in hell can i ever afford those cars but its nice to know that that big three in japan are away building supercars. I know the economy is fked up and the enviroment is gone to hell but still. RIP nsx and LF-A protos. Long live godzilla

Some people are going to be happy. This new NSX is too far from what was envisioned 18 years ago and fine tuned by Ayrton Senna....
