Dog in trunk? need dog lovers advice
So I've been considering getting a dog, primarily a lab, but i was wondering if anyone has put their dog in the trunk? and if a fully grown lab would fit back there? it seems like there would be space if the dog would be seated.
OFF TOPIC... Any dog recommendations? :) Id like a lab, or something like a mid-size dog. My only problem is that i can get fairly busy during the day and labs seems to need a lot of attention. :tiphat: |
Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..... In the trunk of the Z? Cause no it would not fit. We have a daschund and she runs back there sometimes and forgets its cramp jumps up and hits her head on the glass. So no a full grown lab would not fit.
And if this is for any other car you should not a dog should not be in the trunk. Maybe you should consider a hamster? |
I have a < 20 lb miniature schnauzer who fits back there perfectly. I'm not sure a larger dog would fit back there except maybe lying down the whole time.
Here's a before/after pic from our most recent trip to the groomer's:

It will be my first dog, I've wanted a lab since i was a kid. So i decided to do my HW on dogs and ask around a few questions. Since we only have 2 seats and the trunk is a hatch, i thought if the dog fit back there then it wouldn't be so bad. so thanks for the input :tiphat: |

never tried putting our lhasa apsos back there... cause of my 12" sub lol. It just sits on my wife lap whenever we go places. Far as a Lab..I think that will be too big to put back there.

guess i should consider a smaller dog |
My 55lb lab/pit mix likes to ride back there even with my sub back there lol

If I put my Lab in the back of the Z, her claws would rip the living **** out of everything south of the seats.
You are correct, Labs are the BEST dogs. But they need a lot of room. I have a beater car, a 96 Camry. The back seat folds down and that is what I use when I take my two dogs with me. |

No way you can fit a lab in there. I have never even considered putting my husky (bit smaller than a lab) in the trunk. It's really, really cramped and where's the fun for the dog when there are no windows for it to stick its head out?

I have a 90 lbs German Sheppard/pit bull. I put a blanket over the passenger seat and he rides up front with me

For short trips, there should be enough room for all but the largest dog to lay down in the hatch area but I wouldn't want to keep a big dog cooped up back there for very long. A lot depends on how well the dog handles cramped quarters - some do better than others. Also keep in mind that it's liable to be quite warm under the rear window when the Sun is out.
I bought a cheap seat cover for the passenger seat and my dog (Australian Cattle Dog, approx 35 lb) rides there. The ppl that clean my car complain about the hair. I guess I should have gone with a car that doesn't have an all-black interior. :) I can't be much help as far as breed choice goes but I'm very glad that you care enough to find a breed that fits your lifestyle and are not basing your decision on cuteness. There are several web sites that can help you select a breed. |
I have a Shiba Inu/fox mix that does fit back there but I usually let her sit up front to enjoy the window and I usually let my King Charles Cav lay in the back but he's such a lap dog that hes all over the place when i'm driving. There's so many different types of dog breeds and each has their own tempermant and charateristics its hard to pick the right one, But my Shiba is very independent. We found her in the wild so she does fine being by herself for long periods of time, but at the same time is very affectionate... well when she wants to be lol. O and she's JDM too!

My Boston Terrier rides shotgun wherever I go. Only downfall is all the little white hairs that get into the nice black interior... But she is my girl...so my car is her car....I would never ...ever put my dog in the trunk...thats just mean IMO

What is mean about about letting a dog ride in the back? Unless it is a big dog, there should be plenty of room. |

I have 2 labs, average size...once's 60 pounds the other is 70 pounds. Once while I was installing my audio system my dog climbed into the footwell and managed to fit so for kicks I let them climb in the trunk to see if they would fit there. Each of them could individually fit back there, but I would never actually drive with either of them like that.
2 reasons. One, the space isn't really big enough. A full size lab most certainly would have to lay down and not move at all for the entire ride. This just seems unnecessarily cruel. Secondly, it's not even remotely safe. If you were to get into an accident, especially in the rear of your car, there is a very real and fairly significant possibility that you are going to kill your dog. Please don't do this. Labs are awesome dogs and I highly recommend getting one, but do the right thing and get a harness so your dog can enjoy the ride too! If you're worried about your interior a passenger side seat cover or even a blanket should protect it pretty well, though with a larger dog you'll be forever cleaning nose prints off your windows. Best of luck! |

My dachshund fits fine, but he's only 13 lbs. He's about 5 inches longer than my shoes and those are size 14s in the back! I doubt you'd want to get a normal sized dog if you expect to drive 'em around in a Z.

^that's a cute dog you've got

My dog(lhasa apso) Bear loves riding passenger :) |
I guess it just depends on the dog (size, temperament, &c) and how far you are going. I wouldn't want to keep a large dog cooped up back there for more than a few minutes but a mini/toy might have enough room for a cross-country trip.
My ACD is rather high-strung and, even though she would fit, she wouldn't be (mentally) comfortable. Plus, I can't think of a good way to get her back there without scratching the paint or interior. The ACD I had back around the turn of the century was much calmer and would probably have done just fine. |
