I'm actually leaning towards .308 for a couple of reasons. I'd really love to be able to run a .338 Lapua, but with how cheap I am I'd never shoot the stupid thing.

Also, sold my 1911 today. Dude that bought it has some great plans for it which is how I justified it to myself...

I feel you with the price issue... When you have multiple guns, you really have a lot to factor in. I want to get the browning in 7mm rem mag.

You sold the rock island? The great thing about 1911's is there is so much you can do to them so it can be a one of a kind gun. I'll take on a project like that once the climate cools down. (if you know what i mean?)

Anyone here have thoughts on Windham(old bushy) vs new bushy vs SW Mp15's ? These are the brands the lgs are getting in. Shot a bushy today, its a new bushy, seems fine, but Im a Ar-15 noob.

I see .308 as kind of a sweet spot. I may even wind up building an AR10 or whatever to accomplish that goal. 30 acres really isn't enough to need any more, and modern bullet technology let's me do what I need to with .308.

I'd love to do a 1911 project but I just can't justify it until I round out a couple more empty spots in my collection.

The 3 are all decent entry level Ar rifles. But they all have varied-featured low end models and when looking at brands like that. The name brand will help you a lot less than the features tyou will be looking for. All of the rifles will need some type of modification for improved reliability... That said Here's what I'd be looking for more than brand at a low price.

I'm going to show you a rifle. I'm not promoting or demoting the brand itself. I encourage you make your own brand choice. As opinions are like Azzholes... But I want you to look at the list of features on this rifle, more than brand itself. Those are the features you should be looking for in your first M4 rifle.

Yeah, but I didn't want to have a whole bunch of mismatched PMAGs...I am kinda weird like that

Thanks for the info! I was looing at the local classifieds, there is actually one of these for sale locally, again being an ar noob I did not know the name core. he was 1300 for it, has some extras. Guess im hust hesitant in buying a used one p2p, buying a new one I would at lease have some warranty coverage if need be, I know failures are not likely but I am useually over cautious.

Core 15 is a new company with a NO Bullshyt warranty. They build what i consider in materials and workmanship, the best rifles out there right now for the money. BUT, operationally, I can't vouch for them due to being new. You need to do some research. I just know one thing. Their rifles are packed with every feature necessary to get started with a Reliable AR.

Stag with a plus package would be my first choice in the $900-$1200 price range but they have a 2 year backorder. Going about $300-$500 more than a Stag, there's Daniel Defense would be my first choice if I were spending in the $1500 range. This would be my rule if shopping Direct Impingement rifles.

Just want to stress thats my opinion and is based on my own research. I still encourage you to research and make the best decision that suits your needs. There are plenty of rifles that are awesome quality beyond my recommendations. I just gave my opinion as a GENERAL GUIDELINE

Windham = Bushmaster. Suitable as a range plinker, not a serious-use firearm. The M&P is more highly regarded.

The features on a particular rifle are not what you pay for. You're paying for the quality and reliability of the firearm and the quality control which goes into the total package, which is at least in part determined by the quality and reliability of the parts that go into it. Taking a bargain basement rifle and slapping a bunch of bargain basement doo-dads on it does not make a quality rifle.

You can get a Colt 6920 for not very much more money (in a normal market). If you're looking for durability and reliability, that would be the way to go.

It will be a plinknig rifle only, the market sucks, but I want to grab one before I cannot have one period. I bee researching and most say the new bushmaster is not the same quality of those made in the past and the windham rifles are better. I could buy online I guess to get more options, but those 3 brands are consistently coming into the LGS, thus why I think I will be limited to those brands unless I go used. I looked up the core15, they have a liftime warranty on the gun, does not matter who owns it, or at least that is what they adverstise.

Warranty means nothing if the gun doesn't work when you need it. Beyond that, warranty work is a pain.

Colts are hard to find now, but a great option if you can find at reasonable prices. DD is accepting orders now at msrp as well.

Joepro 03-11-2013 03:09 PM

the build a rifle tool is oh so fun the DD website!

Correct, my 300 BLK SBR build is scheduled for the first week in April. I have researched DD, and asked guys like Wes of MSTN, etc. about them, and DD actually DOES do 99% of their stuff (random figure, but you get the idea) in-house, and they do a damn good job. I would honestly take DD over any other "mass produced" M4 out there right now. Of course, Noveske, MSTN, etc. will give you more customization and spend more time on the rifle as a while, but for a line-item, I think DD is the choice I am most happy with.
