Windows 8 is good.
The main thing people are complaining about is the new Metro (or whatever they are going to officially call it) UI, with all the tiles like Windows Phone. It will run just like Windows 7 but with newer features build primarily for touch devices.

No, the reason for the Vista fiasco was they allowed manufactures to sell computers with it installed with worth specs than Windows XP systems. They fixed that with W7 and forcing them they must sell a certain minimum or not be allowed to purchase the license.

After having watched a few people using windows phones, I gotta say, I'm not impressed, or feeling the need to switch. I don't get too deep into the OS or coding/programing level so 7 seems fine to me...?

Windows Phone is still in its early stages since the overhaul a couple years ago. Think of iOS almost 5 years ago or Android 3 years ago. Microsoft is moving quickly and will probably create a 3 way tie with Apple & Google for the mobile market, but not for a couple more years.
