Another deceased 370z driver...

I found out that he is an employee at the Costco my family and I frequent. I know who he is from talking to his coworker. He was such a helpful fellow. Always smiling. Sad news for sure. Apparently he was not racing (confirmed by CHP I heard) and he has or had diabetes at some point. I read about it in my local paper first:

Quote:

A 22-year-old Escondido man was killed Tuesday when his vehicle hit a light pole on the shoulder of south Interstate 15 near Via Rancho Parkway, then veered across the freeway and crashed into the center divider.

The county Medical Examiner's Office identified him Wednesday as Derek Anthony Millsap.

Witnesses said the man, who was driving a 2011 Nissan 370Z, had been racing on the freeway on-ramp with the driver of a black, four-door Nissan Titan pickup with tinted windows, said CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt. The pickup driver did not stop after the accident, reported about 4:40 p.m.

Witnesses said the driver of the car was stopped at a stoplight on westbound Via Rancho Parkway. When the light turned green, the car and pickup raced south on the ramp at a high rate of speed, Bettencourt said.

The car went out of control and the driver’s side struck a metal light pole on the right shoulder. The car came to rest in an express lane after hitting the center divider.

The car’s right rear tire came off and hit a silver Toyota Camry, causing minor damage to the Camry, Bettencourt said.

Neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have been factors in the accident, Bettencourt said.

Millsap, the car’s driver, died at the scene.

The fast lane and express lanes were closed for more than three hours for an investigation.

Authorities asked anyone who witnessed the collision or has information on the Nissan Titan to call the CHP at (858) 637-3800.

This is why I RARELY let my 23 year old son drive my car!

ImportConvert 02-02-2012 12:22 AM

Very unfortunate.

Age has nothing to do with it. I have had old guys in their 911's cut me off in my Z before, and grin the whole way. Maturity is what matters here.

The deceased knew the potential cost of his actions, and was okay with that. I am glad noone was injured who was not involved. I feel sorry for the friends and family of the deceased, as he was likely a great guy who enjoyed risky things. RIP.

Sad and Very unfortunate! R.I.P

Street racing never a good idea!

kenchan 02-02-2012 07:35 AM

Sorry to the people involved. :(

m4a1mustang 02-02-2012 07:38 AM

Sad.

Red__Zed 02-02-2012 07:58 AM

Very sad

Vince 02-02-2012 08:10 AM

I hate hearing about these things. Very said. RIP.

Pharmacist 02-02-2012 08:33 AM

RIP. So tragic. Whether street racing, or just jockeying for position, it's just stupid and not worth it. Not worth taking a gamble with your life.

happytheman 02-02-2012 09:23 AM

Speed is for the track, in controlled conditions. We all know what our rides are capable of, why must so many feel the need to show others too?

So sad for the families involved in this tragic loss. :(

Thanks import, that is so true. Sorry to hear about the accident OP.

dirtrat 02-02-2012 09:55 AM

Of course you have seen older people do this but age is a factor. Younger kids don't have the driving experience and often make bad decisions. Sorry but have to disagree with you on this one!

I agree with you. If I had a son he would know he is not borrowing any of my cars. You and I were both 23 at one time and in general know what guys do or might think in some situations. I hate to say this but we have been there done that. I know you will catch some flack but statisics don't lie. Insurance companies know risk when they see the numbers. Insurance is nothing more than numbers.

Funny some have already called you out for being honest. I laughed at the mentioning of the old man in the 911 etc. Probably did happen cause some
" old " guys never grow up. LOL :driving:

Its sad regardless. I wonder how it actually happened? Did he swerve to avoid a car or something?

Fire 02-02-2012 10:37 AM

Sad news. Puts all sports cars in a bad light when this happens. Ofcourse as a Titan owner also doesn't look good either.:shakes head:

eddieconfetti 02-02-2012 10:47 AM

Sad. Rip

ccdominic 02-02-2012 10:54 AM

I'm sry to hear about this guys. Really makes me stop and think to be more careful.

Mt Tam I am 02-02-2012 11:13 AM

Awful story, with implication he was doing something wrong (unconfirmed racing), adds an extra trauma to the family.

alcheng 02-02-2012 12:59 PM

Always sad when hear this kind of news. RIP.

And pls.... No Road Racing, Keep in on the Track.

I think this is the type of reactionary change that will benefit all of us. Practicing restraint is hard to do in such a nice car, but it does pay off in the end (I'm not assuming he was racing. I'm speaking in general.)

I'm talking to myself first with this "advice".

It is painful to read things like this. My heart goes out to the family!

the picture of the crashed car doesn't look so bad, from the look of it, the driver should have been able to walk away but maybe he wasn't wearing the seat belt :-(

kenchan 02-03-2012 03:08 PM

there were pictures on the article?

Look closer... it's pretty bad. The roof over the driver side is pretty much collapsed completely.

anthonyy 02-03-2012 03:59 PM

didn't see any pics...

there was a picture of that car on the article that I read. it's a white 370z.
when I get home, I will post the pic. the damages didn't look too bad but i didn't pay attention to the roof though.

m4a1mustang 02-03-2012 04:12 PM

There is a video from a helicopter showing the scene attached to this story: Street Racing Kills Escondido Man: CHP | NBC San Diego

You can see that he knocked down a light pole on the right side and the car eventually came to rest on the other side of the highway. Based on the damage to the car it looks like he might have hit the pole roof first since the door is not caved in.

kenchan 02-03-2012 04:33 PM

thanks... such a sad sight. :(
