The "tread" makes me think it's a basketball shoe. Not much, but a start. Edit: The lines in the front look like they're from an Adidas shoe.

Is there anywhere in there where you can sort of make out a brand name/logo?
With a pattern like that, you're looking at possibly anyone... Not to mention, with it being in cali, you're looking at any sort of flip flop/slip on shoe as well...  A brand name would help narrow it down a bit...
