I'm only working at an internship now so I still get paid hourly. Don't really think that matters too much compared to an actual salary. I wouldn't mind telling close friends and family exactly how much I make, but outside of that no one needs to know. Although I have been tempted to ask my supervisor how much he makes. Mostly just to get an idea of how much I would get if I got a full time job working here after I graduate.

It is different when talking to a supervisor, or when you're interning, but if you're on a team of professionals, there's no reason to ask that question. Just comb job openings to see what the industry standard is and measure yourself that way.

I was asked this question earlier from a acquaintance at my barbecue in front of some other guests. I do not want my income to be public knowledge between my friends and co-workers. I want to know if any one had been asked how much they make and how they responded. Thanks.

One option is the "F" word.

Hey, THAT'S IT!!!! I believe I have a solution to your issue. Give your salary to the guy asking the question in the shape of a mathematical equation, great chances he won't figure it out and he would leave you alone perplexed and ashamed. Some like this, my salary is (-varB + Square root [varB^2 - 4varA*varC])/2*varA - varA, varB & varC are integers that you previously defined. Do that and watch the magic happen, you'll never ever again be bothered ;)

Unless you work with other engineers.

Depending who it is, my response would be anywhere from "Enough." to telling them the truth. I know what 2 of my really good friends make and they know what I make. My parent's know what I make. I'd tell my brother and sister, or a girl I'd been seeing for a while if they asked.
