Yep, first one is 28 weeks later and the second is 28 months later, but in the end they really have no connection other than a movie about the same topic. Characters are different, direction of the movie is different, even the atmosphere it created was different.

Resident evil is about a virus which can bring people back from the dead because of the T-virus which animates cells.

28 weeks/months later is about a virus which is a rage component. They are not so much zombies but lifeless humans who have not died yet. Normal ways to kill a human work without them coming back to life.

I enjoyed the movies, better or worse than RE? Tough call, 28 weeks later has no pretty girl or crazy guns, but it has a solid story and plenty of "oh **** oh **** oh ****" scenes.
