just because the nicer homes now do a 12"+ doesn't mean they are better. Unfortunately I don't work with any contractors anymore since we sold the business so I'm doing lots of web searching.

Integrity problems how? I couldnt imagine integrity problems from the tile itself, just how good of an install you do :D
You probably know about backer board, and you probably also realize you need to use a quick set poly blended mortar, and only do one tile at a time. Slow and patient.

also, you need the underlying layer to attach the tiles for strong durability and waterproofing it.

Yeah I'm using hardie backer this time instead of the traditional cement backer board. I've been told it holds up longer. Got my mortar, sealer, spacers, grout, etc. Should be good.

My fiancee really likes the stuff in Shumby's shower but we are debating the size of it. I say its a 12"x12" she says its a 16"x16". I think the 16"x16" is just too big and would require unnecessary cutting, not to mention the weight on the wall.

Edit: That and I think the difference between the stuff in Shumby's Shower is marble and we are looking at slate or faux slate.

Underlying layer? Do you mean the backerboard?

laters everyone

BanningZ, keep me updated on the tile install, i wanna see how you do it.

BanningZ 03-25-2009 08:47 PM

Interesting. I looks like their using an almost tar paper kind of layer befor eht ebacker board goes up. i suppose that would make a good moisture barrier underneath the backer board.
