So many means of communication, yet people are going socially sterile. Hell, even handwriting is going out the door. :shakes head:

Or "I meet so many women (or men whatever the case may be) on there you just don't know." Well incase you haven't noticed the world is very over populated and people have been hooking up for thousands of years as proof of such. Some people get their feelings so hurt that they kill themselves, or beat the other person up and/or kill them. All this over what some azz clown has said in print, it's just words people. "Sticks and stones, may break my bones but WORDS will never hurt me." I know some will say, "well your on this site and it's a type of social network." This is true, but atleast we are on here mostly for info and/or to connect with others that have 370's. If my friends were into cars i'd just hang with them. Well i could rant for hours about this, but any longer of a post and most won't read.

I think I'm alright with face to face time, glad I'm not one of those awkward pplz.

is this a troll thread? not sure if serious.

i heard a study that was saying an ideal person's circle of 'meaningful friends' hovers around 50 people. supposedly there's another site being built that limits you to 50 friends / network connections / whatever you want to call them.

my fbook account just sits there...if people want to write me something i'll respond, but generally i don't write something in my status unless i'm REAAAALLY wored.

amusingly enough some people respond to fbook messages more than answering their phones or texts.

spearfish25 03-24-2011 11:50 AM

Someone needs to crash their Z or blow their engine so people have something relevant to read and post about...

Carno 03-24-2011 12:25 PM

Eh, I like facebook. Being in the military, I have friends all over the country and it would take way too much effort to call or email all of them. And it's not because we're not actually good friends, it's just that I'm busy with my job and they're busy with theirs. Unless I have some relatively significant reason to call or email them, it's just not gonna happen, and vice versa. But facebook makes it easy to see what they've been doing with their lives (mostly via photos), and they can see what I've been doing. So it's nice to sort of keep tabs on them until I have a reason and/or time to call and really catch up with that person. Also, I don't even add people unless I actually consider them a friend. Person I sort of knew in high school/middle school/whatever? Not getting added.

I think it's mostly people with too much time on their hands who do stupid **** like treat it like twitter or who play crap like farmville. Anyone who starts that gets immediately unfriended.

You still havent responded to my farmville request Kaien.....

Highway 03-24-2011 01:04 PM

I have 2 FB accounts.

1st is for close friends and I usually just make fun of myself or what happened to me.

2nd is for business connections in the race world.

I don't use my real name for either of them, so I'm able to stay somewhat anonymous to high school friends, stalkers, etc.

I did this a while back on "National Unfriend Day". At first I thought it was a pretty funny joke, but once you started axing people it actually became sort of empowering.

I'm 34 but have had a Facebook account for a long time because the interns in my office all had it and they insisted we all join so that they could tag us in photos they took when we did happy hour after work. For a long time (years) I had very few friends and then almost overnight, everyone my age somehow got clued into the fact that Facebook existed and they all friend requested me. Since I knew these people, I accepted all the requests but found that none of them had any interest in reconnecting. They just wanted to see what I was doing, if I got fat, got married, etc.

All those people got the ax on National Unfriend Day. I pared it down to people I actually speak to at least once a year and family members (who quite honestly I really don't want viewing my profile, but how can you not accept a request from them?).

When used like that, Facebook is a really useful tool for one main reason: photo sharing. Beyond that, if you've moved across the country like I did, it's useful for keeping in touch with old friends back where you're from, who you may only see once or twice a year.

Our information on facebook is already being used against us. The irony is that 99.9% of facebook users are naive enough to think that it is "free," while Zuckerberg is selling every sliver of every word/picture/video/like you post on facebook.

I'm glad i don't own a web cam, or device that has web cam in it.

Footloose301 03-24-2011 02:22 PM

I like facebook. However, I get random friend requests each day and I add them anyways just in case I met them the night before and I look thru the pics to jog my memory.

I suppose a friend request confirms my incoherent bedtime actions.

"F face book in the A"

People ask me how I can live/survive without all of the modern amenities such as a cell phone, ipod, flat screen, etc, etc.. My answer: Remember 1993? Just like that. If somebody sends me an e mail, and expects a punctual reply from me , they are dreaming. Last night was the first time I checked e mail in a month. Read one and was done. If it is important, then call me.

I know where you're going with this and this argument is a total non-starter. Let me ask you a question: do you have friends or family that live in other cities who you only talk to occasionally? Well if you do, Facebook gives you a peek into what they do between those times. When you talk, you have some idea what they've been up to. It can actually make for better conversation because you have a list of talking points.

All of this of course assumes that you use the program for it's intended purpose of staying in touch with your friends, not just adding every drunk person you met at the bar last night and all 450 from your high school graduating class.

I wonder if anyone else sees the obvious irony that you claim to live in "1993" and refuse to check emails but you have 900+ posts on an internet message forum?

This whole thread is ironic. What started as a rant on Facebook's useless discussion has turned into a useless discussion. It's like a stripper judging a porn star because its not classy. Unless you live under a rock, we're all technology sluts in one form or another.

Of course i have friends and family in other states and coutries. Who needs the face just to communicate with people you know. It's a sad world we live in when people can't find things to talk about without a list of the last crap that was taken by uncle bob and stupid pics of jenny from the block.:shakes head: Most of my friends and fam do use the face, even the wifes uses it. I still think it's ridiculous, unnecessary, and all about "look how many friends i've got, and all these people like what i posted i must be cool."

There is a really good documentary about FB on CNBC that really exposes all of the data mining/retention FB does on every user. It's pretty eye-opening how much they know.
