Imminent Earthquake in North America

Just saw this article. Imminent earthquake between the dates of march 19th-26th. The evidence sounds pretty convincing. What do you guys think about this? All i can say is everybody be prepared. My prayers that this doesn't actually come to a head.

Boost_lee 03-18-2011 05:12 AM

I hope he is not right on his prediction, but the evidence does sound convincing since I know nothing about seismic activity lol

370zFORme!! 03-18-2011 05:23 AM

Ya the thing is there is also a lot of evidence pointing to earthquakes not being predictable because they are so random and chaotic. Then again, if you've ever studied chaos theory, you could make the argument that chaos theory has some pretty rigorous mathematics behind it, and it’s possible to model the overall chaotic system with great precision.

TreeSemdyZee 03-18-2011 06:41 AM

Most of the chaos involved is when everybody freaks out and worries about it.
There were "predictions" of a huge earthquake in this area sometime in the last 20 years and everyone was going absolutely bonkers. Question is, what good does it do to worry about it?

370zFORme!! 03-18-2011 02:48 PM

Wasn't trying to worry anyone, just making sure my family is prepared.

spearfish25 03-18-2011 03:00 PM

Guys, come on. This is Fox news aka Fear news.

You're telling me that earthquakes now occur in clockwise patterns and the retired geologist is also an expert biologist who can explain fish kills by impending seismic events? Sorry. Not buying it at all.

All their examples supporting their hypothesis of an impending quake happen to leave out all the whale beachings, fish kills, and close lunar passes that DIDN'T have associated earthquakes...and I'd be willing to bet there are many more of these events without earthquakes than the few they listed that did have earthquakes associated.

I also love how the idiot Fox news people call scientists 'geniuses'. So going to college, receiving a degree, and then consulting for a news station makes you a genius... Einstein would feel slighted.

Rui Z 03-18-2011 03:04 PM

Sensationalism at its best

wheee! 03-18-2011 03:28 PM

They've been predicting a quake on the Canadian west coast for decades now.... we are WAY overdue for one here..... and a big one by the sounds of it. Time will tell..........

kenchan 03-18-2011 03:41 PM

"north america" is a very big place...

wheee! 03-18-2011 03:43 PM

Let's just say "west coast" then....

christian370z 03-18-2011 03:46 PM

The West coast is LONG over due for a major earthquake. Think of the San Andreas fault as two saws with the teeth interlocking. This means that immense forces can build up along the fault as each plate is still being moved in different directions. The reason why this type of fault is particularly dangerous is because one a critical point is reached, all those teeth break and the plates just shear as the energy is released. This has been a risk for decades, not really new news.

kenchan 03-18-2011 03:50 PM

any nuclear power plants on the "west coast" :ugh2:

StLRedrider 03-18-2011 04:00 PM

we're over due here also in the mid west. smack dab on the new madrid fault line.

krzykanuk 03-18-2011 04:22 PM

It's a hoax.

:bowrofl::roflpuke2::bowrofl: nothing too serious, hell i never felt one. seems like everytime they do occur i'm sleeping. oh, we do have plenty of fat asss women running around

March 19th 2011 - Super Moon - Earthquake - Expert Sugession - Climetic Changes

On March 19, 2011 the Moon will pass by Earth at a distance of 356,577 kilometers – the closest pass in 18 years.

This is known as lunar perigee and a normal lunar perigee averaging a distance of 364,397 kilometers (226,425 miles) happens once every orbital period. The term \\”Supermoon\\” was coined by the astrologer Richard Nolle.

In short, Earth, Moon and Sun are all in a line, with Moon in its nearest approach to Earth.

The Supermoon occurred in 1955, 1974, 1992 and 2005 were amazing.

It is a scientific fact that when the Moon is at perigee there is more gravitational pull, creating higher tides or significant variations in high and low tides.

In addition, the tidal effect of the Sun’s gravitational field increases the Moon’s orbital eccentricity when the orbit’s major axis is aligned with the Sun-Earth vector.

The average tidal bulge closely follows the Moon in its orbit, and the Earth rotates under this tidal bulge in just over a day. Generally Tidal forces contribute to ocean currents, which moderate global temperatures by transporting heat energy toward the poles.

It has been suggested that in addition to other factors, harmonic beat variations in tidal forcing may contribute to climate changes.

From extreme coastal tides to severe storms to powerful earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, the entire natural world surges and spasms under the sway of the Supermoon alignment – within three days either way of the exact syzygy, as a general rule.

The effects on Earth from a Supermoon are minor, and according to the most detailed studies by terrestrial seismologists and volcanologists, the combination of the moon being at its closest to Earth in its orbit, and being in its ’full moon’ configuration (relative to the Earth and sun), should not affect the internal energy balance of the Earth since there are lunar tides every day.

The Earth has stored a tremendous amount of internal energy within its thin outer shell or crust, and the small differences in the tidal forces exerted by the moon (and sun) are not enough to fundamentally overcome the much larger forces within the planet due to convection and other aspects of the internal energy balance that drives plate tectonics.

The Supermoon 2011 will mean that it will be brighter and larger in the sky than other full moons, but some believe that the super moon is connected to natural disasters.

Past super moons have been connected to the Indonesian earthquake in 2005 and a massive flood in Australia in Earthquakes, storms, intense tidal activity are some of the probable disasters that the impending ’Supermoon’ or lunar perigee may trigger.

The moon will look much larger than normal especially when it rises on the eastern horizon at sunset, or given the right atmospheric conditions. Some astronomers are predicting that the Lunar Perigee event coinciding with a Full Mean will affect climate patterns on Earth.

No, the “supermoon” didn’t cause the Japanese earthquake | Bad Astronomy | Discover Magazine

ChrisSlicks 03-19-2011 08:48 AM

North America, Japan and New Zealand are all on the edge of the Pacific Plate (Chili is not directly). So far the movement has only been along the western edge of the plate, but movement on the other side can't be ruled out, it's going to happen eventually although not necessarily when the quactologist says it will.

those tectonic plates need SRM

I agree it is sensationalism but everyone should be prepared for "SHTF" situations regardless.

Unlike Japan, if we are struck by some huge natural disaster the general public won't be as disciplined in the aftermath.

rebe945 03-19-2011 05:31 PM

Yep

Its going to happen, just when is the ? Remember the Earth is 5 billion yrs old and we have had a civilized, i say that lightly, society for only 2 thousand yrs. These events will happen. That fault off the NW coast will create a wave 100 ft high . Lights out boys. I guess im not gonna lower my Z.:gtfo2:

There was a quake about 3 years ago. It destroyed the Kentucky Derby Building. Wasn't too big, TBH. I thought my roommate was just using the laundry drier at 3AM lol.

If someone could accurately predict an earthquake insurance companies would make him a very rich man. Then go a cancel everyones policies days before it happens.

1812 New Madrid earthquake - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The future location of Memphis, Tennessee experienced level IX shaking on the Mercalli intensity scale.

Recurrence potential
In a report filed in November 2008, The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency warned that a serious earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone could result in "the highest economic losses due to a natural disaster in the United States," further predicting "widespread and catastrophic" damage across Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and particularly Tennessee, where a 7.7 magnitude quake or greater would cause damage to tens of thousands of structures affecting water distribution, transportation systems, and other vital infrastructure.[18]
The potential for the recurrence of large earthquakes and their impact today on densely populated cities in and around the seismic zone has prompted research devoted to understanding in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. By studying evidence of past quakes and closely monitoring ground motion and current earthquake activity, scientists attempt to understand their causes and recurrence intervals.
The lack of apparent land movement along the New Madrid fault system has long puzzled scientists. In 2009 two studies based on eight years of GPS measurements indicated that the faults were moving at no more than 0.2 millimeters (0.0079 in) a year.[19] This contrasts to the rate of slippage on the San Andreas Fault which averages up to 37 mm (1.5 in) a year across California.[20]

hummm... i forgot to look at the supermoon.

been monitoring my droid app called Latest Quakes and the quakes have started away from japan region again (afganistan, iraq, chile, etc). still seeing a lot of aftershocks from japan region though, as expected.
