Wow, those were all waiting to be loaded at the docks apparently. They came from the same Tochigi plant at Nissan.

krzykanuk 03-11-2011 11:57 AM

Tochigi Plant

"Nissan Motor Co. halted production at five of its plants in northeastern Japan and in the Yokohama area near Tokyo. It said two workers were slightly injured at its Tochigi plant and its technical centre in Kanagawa prefecture, near Tokyo."

I think you meant the same Nissan plant at Tochigi...:p

Didn't notice it before, I just noticed those were brand spanking new cars that still had protective filming. That's a LOT of cash sitting there wrecked.

Sibze 03-11-2011 11:58 AM

I don't see any 370's

Yeah, saw that, but they're just cars. I'm more concerned about the people. Fond memories of Japan and the people I worked with.

Sibze 03-11-2011 12:00 PM

oooooo I do now!

Dustin@Z1 03-11-2011 12:00 PM

Focus just slightly below the middle of the image. There is a Red one with about 10 or so cars right behind it.

Thanks Phelan! Lol

Sibze 03-11-2011 12:01 PM

Ya, I am using my iPhone now and zooming in! There are tones of 370's

I agree 100%. I just thought it was odd that one of the MANY pictures posted up by the many news agencies just happened to be other very cares we all love. When you consider all ther other images that could have been posted.

m4a1mustang 03-11-2011 12:10 PM

Damn, didn't realize those were all Nissans. I remember a number of years ago a big container ship full of Mazdas sunk. I would guess this is probably worse. But I'm sure Nissan's got all of those suckers insured.

I wonder how many forum members orders are going to be delayed because their cars were destroyed on the docks. Still, a trivial thought considering the loss of life. What a terrible situation.

djpathfinder 03-11-2011 12:17 PM

Wow! The destruction is incredible!

6MT 03-11-2011 12:17 PM

Somehow, 30 below with a wind this morning doesn't sound so bad.

Incredible devastation.

kenchan 03-11-2011 12:20 PM

guys, thanks for your thoughts. i was relieved to hear my parents were okay... they can't find their cat. probably hiding somewhere. :icon17:

The aftershocks are bigger than most regular earthquakes. They just had a 6.6 magnitude aftershock.

probably was the easiest one to find, all those new cars from nissan's nearby manufacturing plant basically destroyed.

i was actually terrified for a while when i saw the reports of a fire in a nuclear plant. i'm glad all of the safety mechanisms worked without a hitch and they're all off.

people are saying gas and running water aren't too affected, telephony and electricity are in and out. altogether, it shows japan was actually decently prepared for a heavy-hitting earthquake. compounded by the tsunami though...yeesh.

they reported 8.4 this morning, updated to 8.9...could easily by 9.0+ earthquake by the time we're done analyzing it. the aftershocks are going to be ridiculous. one of the professors at the university of ireland (i know, weird source, but i watch the bbc a lot) was saying aftershocks / tremors of magnitude 6-8.0 can be expected.

If there were two races I'd want to rebuild something, quickly, efficiently (cost and otherwise), and methodically: it would the Japanese and the Germans. They get it done like no other.

Oh, I agree, but only after we wade knee-deep in the sewer pond of US politics.

phelan 03-11-2011 12:36 PM

Obama's deploying the military. F*ck the politics, two aircraft carriers and naval support ships already steaming towards the Japanese coast. For once we acted quickly!

BTW - this is a GREAT article in the NY Times.

not sure why there would be nuclear specialists.. the japanese specialists would be equally good if not better? this isnt Turkey or something!

what i'd be worried about is a major aftershock creating another tsunami that hits the US ships.

Additional containment resources and skill-sets.

P.S. Zero inferences as to the abilities of the Japanese people as I worked hand-in-hand with them on an executive level. Top-shelf.

From NISSAN NEWS

MEDIA ADVISORY: EARTHQUAKE IN JAPAN AND IMPACT ON NISSAN OPERATIONS (UPDATE)

During the overnight hours in the Americas, northern Japan was hit with an 8.9-magnitude earthquake, and numerous tsunamis are causing heavy damage across the Pacific coastline in Asia. Additionally, tsunami alerts have been issued for communities along the entire North America Pacific coastline.

At this time, we are currently confirming the safety of all Nissan employees and continue to assess the situation at our Japanese facilities, but we do not believe our operations have been significantly affected. Here in the Americas we are operating normally and we do not anticipate any immediate impact on Americas operations, facilities, dealers or customers.

Operations have been suspended at Nissan’s Japan plants through Sunday, March 13. Nissan’s global headquarters building in Yokohama was not significantly affected, is safe and operational. So far, there are no reports of employee casualties and employee safety precautions are underway at all locations. Nissan’s team in the Americas will monitor the operational status of our Japan facilities through the weekend for any scheduling updates.

Hawaii is okay. Minimal damages here and there. Maui got a little more damages..think its because of the orientation of the island to the ocean. We got the "all clear" at 8:00 Hawaii time.

Hope the rescue efforts are successful in Japan and work quickly.
