Blurry plates?

Why is it important to blur out your license plate when posting a pic of your car on the net?

are people afraid of that crazy guy with a friend that works at the DMV and will hunt you down and kill you for no reason?

Just curious. because if that is the fear I'm not sure I should be driving around town in public with my plates showing.

ThoriumHotdog 02-08-2011 01:57 PM

Actually, you don't have to work at the DMV or for some law agency to get this info. Theres a few pay sites around that let you search names and plates. Personally, I wouldn't want to let random strangers know what I have under the hood especially once I mod the exterior and my car is easier to spot.

Because I'm a heartless troll that shoots my mouth off on here regularly, lol, I want to hide behind the illusion of anonymity to avoid vandalism. :bowrofl:

most people i shoot for say "i don't care", especially if they have personalized plates. the ferrari i shot recently had a transporter tag on it so i cloned out the digits because they asked me to. most people don't care (myself included)

yeah seems a little far fetched to think that someone will make the connection to web pics and my car in the real world. even if they did and decided that they wanted to break in couldnt they just write down my plate # when i drive by?

exactly why most people don't care that much

shadoquad 02-08-2011 02:32 PM

I care. It's silly, but it's a paranoid thing. Besides, it doesn't really take away from the photos, imo. When I get vanity plates, I'll stop doing it.

Jordo! 02-08-2011 02:33 PM

In theory, if you were boasting about street racing, a copper in the area could take note of the plate and keep an eye on you. I always thought that was why people did it.

Otherwise, I have no idea what the point is.

Ok, let me try to explain my paranoia. If it doesn't meet your standards, folks, then it still ain't gonna change the way I feel.
  1. You know what car I drive
  2. You know approx where I live
  3. You know what paint color and trim my car is
  4. Other than the locals that I meet at events in the area, probably no one has seen my plate numbers, and even my local buddies probably can't rattle it off the top of their heads.
  5. If I don't have to divulge that information, why should I?
  6. If you take strong exception to something that I say on here, and you see a Black Cherry Z on the street, you may give pause to vandalizing it if you're unsure whether it belongs to some innocent third party.
  7. I have other reasons that I cannot discuss here.

Other than the part about owning a gay-*** colored car, I agree with the above. Of course, I am one paranoid crazy ************, so...

ProfessorDave 02-08-2011 09:04 PM

I won't ever show a clear picture of my license plate.

Ever.

I do it so that "my" car isn't for sale on dozens of craigslist ads. I am also careful about posting speeding stories in case the local law is trolling for any information, not that I would speed mind you.

There were a couple of M3's there that had their plates covered. Apparently BMW likes to void warranties of tracked cars. Pretty f'ing lame, especially when you buy an "M" BMW.

If they want your car they are going take it, blur license plate or not.

From a security standpoint, you can say this about a lot of things. I mean, by that logic, why have door locks at all? If they want your car or stuff, they can just smash the window.

I don't live under the illusion that my car is completely secure like whoa. And to me, it's less about theft than vandalism. Bad guys can still find me, ok? But why would I make it any easier?

If you have locks on your door, people can still break in, but they have to go through more trouble to do so, and it may deter them.

If someone really wants to punk me or find me, they can do it by searching through this site, ok? But not by just looking at pictures of my car that I've posted.

now if that's not cop bait, what is????

shadoquad 02-09-2011 01:29 PM

Also, vanity tags should be excluded from this discussion. If you have personalized vanity tags, you've already painted a target on yourself, so what would it matter if you post it online?

True, but if you live under the illusion that blurring your plate will keep your car safe, you are really just fooling yourself. Bad stuff happens to nice people and nice cars. That's why I have insurance! (and alcohol.... )

:p

:p

It's a step of abstraction. People can walk up to my house and vandalize my car while I'm at work. That can happen.

Someone can get mad at me on here and seek my car to vandalize it.

Leaving my house number and license plates in my pix makes that easier.

It's not about absolute prevention, it's about minor obfuscation.

It's not a complete illusion. It's about keeping a smaller target on me.

And if you think it's just plain paranoia, well good for you, you go live your life and let me stay warm under my false security blanket. Go live the good life, and rage at blurred license plates on internet forums. whoopty do.
