The Fridge at Work

We have a fridge at my place of business that's used for people's lunches/dinners, etc. (we are a 24 hour facility). This fridge gets pretty nasty every now and then, until someone decides to clean it out. I'm usually one of those guys, because I can't stand month-old milk stinking up my lunch.

Anyways, I went to the fridge this morning and there was raw chicken sitting in the original packaging (the gooey, styrofoam pack) on one of the shelves. It was probably 4 or 5 chicken breasts to begin with, but half of it was cooked last night (I'm assuming) and the other half was left in the fridge raw, probably to cook tonight or on a later date. The chicken wasn't in a bag, or sealed containeer. It had a flimsy piece of seran wrap "mostly" covering the top of the chicken.

Some of my coworkers are giving me a hard time now because I immediately took it the trash. Am I wrong?

thats pretty gross. i would have done the same thing. i guess the more nice thing to do would to find something better to wrap it in, put it back away, and leave a note. but i wouldnt have done that

That was my initial reaction, but we've had "fridge problems" for over a year now, with all kinds of nasty stuff being left in it. The benefit of the doubt is LONG gone when it comes to the fridge.

Scary. Definitely not wrong. Sounds like you should bring in your own fridge with a lock. Let the less concerned deal with their mess. I wouldn't touch it :shakes head:

We have a rule in our lounge.. if it's their overnight, it's gonna get thrown away. The fridge is for today's LUNCH, not lunch, dinner, and lunch tomorrow.

Our office fridge can get pretty nasty. Someone will inevitably forget about something and it gets all nasty, but our office manager is pretty good at keeping it clean for the most part.

Our office fridge is a danger zone. I will never ever put food or even a drink in it. The last time someone cleaned it out there was a salad that was so old it had turned into a liquid. People cannot remember what's in an office fridge its like a disability - a bad one for everyone else!

It was only wrong if you enjoy having the craps and vomiting.

I work in an engineering office, and our community fridge is always a nasty mess. You would think that people would be a little more responsible.

It is not only the mess that drives me crazy. It is the 20 people that put their insulated lunch box coolers in the fridge. It is insulated! And now there is no room for my stuff, not that I use that fridge very often, between all of the cooler bags and the rotting junk.

Same situation, except we do week on/week off intervals.

I have told them 100+ times, when you go off hitch, throw your **** away! It's impossible to determain which items are current workers and which are left behind from last people.

Raw chicken or fish has to go, sorry.

I know the note comment was made. I have some (oddly) strong feelings on the note thing. I see these little notes left on the fridge, the microwave, the sink, etc. Last week, someone put a note above the sink that said "NEVER put food down the drain of the sink!" I look, and it's got a fuckin garbage disposal.

These note leavers are the pusses of society that were bred unable to confront people about problems. Here is how I envision it going:
Some douchebag writes a note at his/her desk, puts it in a folder or book so no one sees him/her with the note, and then later sees it on the fridge and can pinpoint who did it. So once in the break area, they assure no one is around, and that no one was behind them. They then quickly place the note and gtfo out of there. They may even leave with a drink or snack or something, so that if someone sees them leaving, they will assume they went to get a soda rather than posting the note that has popped up.

Don't get me wrong, I get pretty pissed when someone puts something disgusting in the fridge, or leaves crap in their for days, but I've got enough sack to go talk to the person. The couple times I have had to leave a note because I didn't know who the person was, I put my name on there like john fuckin hancock. I don't leave the notes blank and hide in ambiguity like a twat.

On another note, there is a site dedicated to these faggy notes where people send pics of them in. Hilarious.

PassiveAggressiveNotes.com ? funny (if not necessarily "passive-aggressive") notes from pissed-off people

I also work in an engineering office, and our fridges get pretty nasty. They only get cleaned out when someone complains and the stench from the inside becomes overwhelming. If you are daring enough to store food in the company fridge, you may be fortunate enough to not even be able to enjoy it, because people will steal and eat it. I used to keep sodas in there, but a 12 pack would disappear in a matter of a few days, after I had maybe two. On the rare occasion that I do store food in the fridge, it's usually in a fairly sealed container or bag that I write my name all over, or seal it up so well that the would be food thief passes it over for easier pickings.

I now bring in my own cooler with a days supply of soda and sometimes lunch. No one is bold enough to come behind my desk and steal food. It irritates me that people are so petty that they will steal food in what is supposed to be a professional environment.
