How I know I'm getting old (Thread)

I just thought this could be a good place to share stories of getting older and the first time you realized it.

I'm not that old, but I was telling a story to a younger group of kids recently and one of them interrupted to ask "What is a discman?"

Buuuuuuuuuurn.

If this is lame delete it.

Im only 21 but I felt old knowing I waited longer to see toy story 3 than most of the people seeing it have been alive

Ha ha ha, hell yeah, I love toy story!

LinPark 06-26-2010 06:57 AM

It's all relative I guess but when you keep watching movies that go back in time and you actually recognize everything it really starts to sink in - I watched Hot Tub Time Machine recently and that predates the Discman (but at least I don't look as bad as Chevy Chase) - I still have a hand-held tape player around here somewhere. In a few more years, there won't be anymore hard media players around so start collecting if you are into that type of thing. :)

...When a 21 year-old thinks he feels old.
< been working at his job longer than that.

It's weird for me personally. I don't really feel that old, but when I look at someone that is my age and say, "man they look old" and I realize we're the same age is weird.

Also, when you're 82 year-old mother points out the fact that you have a lot of gray hair in your goatee.

SmoothZ 06-26-2010 08:07 AM

I was at work the other day and was discussing some show or concept or something and we had to tell the youngest one in the group it was before her time.

I also consider anyone born in the 80's or 90's a kid.

...I'm 61, and actually own a Z...Is that lame OR WHAT???

Nikon FM 06-26-2010 10:23 AM

clothes and music:

When I see "younger" (relative) people and realize that I think their clothes are pretty stupid….. I've drifted out of "young" fashion even though hard edge music tastes are the same or mine are harder edged.

what about dancing styles > Older people probably feel like this :ughdance:

TreeSemdyZee 06-26-2010 10:33 AM

starting to go bald at 26 and all my skateboarding years (age 11-22ish) are really haunting me bodyache-wise

I remember back when Whitney Houston was hot. Farris Bueller was my hero. And I could beat down ANYBODY if you let me be Starman.

When I discovered that your typical Gen Yer gets very few references to anything from more than a month ago... :ugh:

And knows more about what's been circulating lately on you tube than anything in a book :ugh2:

Here's one: How many of you are old enough to remember being seriously afraid of a nuclear war with Russia?

Whenever i talk about TV shows, cartoons, and the great movie trilogies I grew up with, my girlfriend has no idea what I'm talking about, and says "Back in your day".

Did anyone in here ever own an 8-track player? We had one in the house when I was a kid and my step dad had one in his truck. I remember playing the Police and Journey on them. When you wanted to listen to a particular song again, you had to fast forward all the way around to the song again...there was no rewind.

Zaggeron 06-26-2010 05:48 PM

I had a 8 track player from a car hooked up to a car battery in my room when I was about 11.

I don't feel my age! Come to think of it, I don't act my age! Why should I, that's for old people!

The OP talked about a Discman I think - I remember Walkman's (still have one around here somewhere) - I remember buying my first CD player (since then I've converted back to vinyl) - I remember listening to Elvis Presley on an 8-track tape player in a car. I think of all the things I've seen in my brief time here and wonder what it will be like at the end of my life. My grandparents were born in the 1890's and lived almost 100 years - imagine the changes they saw - cars and planes came about, all the world wars, space travel, computers, holy friggin moly.

And yes, I remember the fear of a nuclear war - knowing what I know now about politicians though I'm not afraid of anything that involves government anymore except taxes. :)

My first LP was KISS Destroyer and I played Detroit Rock City over and over again.
I brought my own popcorn (legally) to see opening of Star Wars.
First movie I saw by myself was "The Warriors".

and besides all that above, you know your getting older when you start going to alot of funerals.
