I've done this for so long and seen the ghastly results, that when I bought an iPhone, I made the conscious decision to always buy the cheap plastic scuff absorbers. It works for me.

I don't keep keys in my pocket (thanks to the Z) but it is in my pocket or backpack with change and other stuff and I've dropped it a few times and it's been really durable. I do have a Casecrown on the back though.
