I'd like to pose a question/problem for all of you Cuban cigar guys

I have a billion cubans and I used to be really into them, just haven't had time to smoke them all...

Recently, I gave a few Montecristo #2's to a friend's dad... He came back at me after he smoked them, and gave the reply of, I don't think they are real...

His explanation, "they had uneven burn, and when I smoke a cuban they have a punch and I get lightheaded..."
This coming from a man who ONLY smokes $2-5 maduro pieces of sh!t I have never heard of...

Do you know if this holds any value? I have never had a Monte 2 burn crappy or lack flavor... And/or do you have a REAL way to prove certain cigars are real

*Side note* I have had people bring me boxes from Cuba, and I have bought boxes in other countries from Duty Free and my sh!t looks legit

I'm not as into them (cigars) as some of the members like Steve and Lou, but in my experience uneven burn isn't about quality, it's about storage conditions. Like say, one side of the cigar is nestled in other cigars, while the other side is open to the humidifier.

As for the "light headed because they have more punch" ****, that just sounds like retarded poser talk.

I saw it no less than 11 times in the theatre. The beginning scene where they rotate around the ship was fuckin amazing on the big screen.

Yeahhhhh, that's what I have always thought...

And for the uneven burn... They are plants, lol, **** happens they burn unevenly...

I'll wait for Lou and Steve (which one) to chime in

I'd say 9 out of 10 times, uneven burn is user error. Either from incorrect storage, improper lighting/smoking.

There have even been times where my cigar would be burning unevenly (a little bit is okay but this was sidewinding like a snake) and I would take my cutter to the lit end and basically start over on the cigar (of course after exhaling through the cigar to get rid of any fouled bits before relighting.) Also, uneven burn is more common to the outdoors smoker because of wind.

To be honest, every real cuban that i've enjoyed tended to burn a little unevenly. But I'm of the mind that cubans are overrated and that there are much better non cuban cigars out there.

After all, a sh1tty cuban is still a cuban, but its also still a sh1tty cigar.

DEpointfive0 02-12-2013 03:37 AM

Yeahhhhh... I light my cigars with a torch and a bic

And if it starts to burn unevenly, I'll either light the slower burning side, or lick the faster burning side

And I KNOW Cubans aren't rated #1 anymore, but for ME, I prefer the shíttiest Cuban to a Padrón
I just can't do Padrons or 99% of Nicaraguan cigars, I just don't like the flavor

Favorite Cuban (that's not limited) has gotta be Cohiba Maduro 5, any size, and the Montecristo Petit Edmundo
Favorite non Cuban... Arturo Fuentes, almost all of them but not their $6-7 sticks, any and every Opus X, Nub Connecticut Box press, and 2 others which I forgot... Aurea something? And Oliva, not sure specifically which one

There are a lot of factors that can lead to uneven burn. I think think any of these three, or a combination, is the culprit:
  1. Humidity too high - If the humidity in your humidor is too high and you go to smoke the cigar right away this can lead to an uneven burn, even if you light properly and the cigar is well made.
  2. User error (failure to light evenly) - A lot of newbies screw up the light... this can kill the burn for the rest of the cigar.
  3. Poor construction - Sometimes if you feel the wrapper of a cigar you can find soft spots. This is where the tobacco was wrapped poorly resulting in air pockets that will burn faster than the more tightly packed tobacco. This will result in uneven burn. Less common in high end cigars but it's always possible.

My guess is it's 1 or 2, or a combination of both.

As far as your friend saying Cubans always leave him feeling light-headed... the Cubans make light, medium, and heavy cigars just like everyone else. :)

I'm sure I've posted it before, but my favorites, in no particular order, are:

Padron 26
My Father Le Bijou 1922 (the Special Edition run was amazing)
Ashton VSG (one of my go-tos)
Oliva Serie V (Serie G and O are good too)
La Aroma De Cuba Mi Amor

I always stock Cusano 18s since they are good for new smokers. Smooth and light, with nice flavor.
