I'd love to work in an elegant office, working alongside absolute professionals wearing dapper suits and using proper manners. Unfortunately, my field of specialization has a proud tradition of slackerwear in confined cheap buildings, at every stage from entry-level positions and interns, to the top academics, to high ranking government civilians, all the way to the foremost technical experts in the field. In other words, to get along in my industry, you go along, and that means business casual, with a heavy emphasis on casual.

I work in a very nice new facility, we built it and moved in November, 2009. That doesn't suddenly make everyone "upscale professional" though, lol. We stopped wearing suits about 5 years ago, I love it. Business casual with logo, ahem, "brandwear" (drink the koolaid) shirts .......... polos, buttondown oxfords, fleece vests, and sweaters all available. It really is nice, especially as hot as it gets down here. After 30 years, wearing a tie everyday sucked......... the glamour of looking dapper gets old quick when the temp is 98 and the humidity matches that :p I love the brandwear! Our new corporate center is first class too, large kitchen common area, great furnishings, and amenities like a small gym with full showers.

Yeah, but my coworkers wear tshirt and jeans, whatever they can get away with. It's not bad, but it's not really professional, either.

I get ya, we are professional and the pants have to be dress or dress khakis..... jeans are only allowed on Fridays, and with a logo shirt still look ok.

m4a1mustang 02-03-2011 07:37 AM

Suit for me. I am a rebel and rarely ever wear a tie.

frost 02-03-2011 07:05 PM

"Business casual" for us. Sometimes I like to wear suits, but I hate tie clips and chains. I try to wear vests to compensate, but it's so hot here that three layers of shirts are just too hot.

Personally I like tie clips and always wear one when I get dressed up. Not for function so much but for the style of it. Tie Clips and pocket squares make me feel more like James Bond so I think that has a lot to do with it

The Viking Refreshment Station ($3,600) is to beverages and appetizers as Nimitz-class super carriers are to F-14 Tomcats. In the beverage department, its cold water sink performs double duty either as a, sink or cold water bottle bath that’s capable of holding two cases of drinks and can be plugged in to stay frosty. If that’s not enough chilled storage, the station features insulated ice bins that also double as additional coolers. Speed rails help store up to five standard-sized wine or liquor bottles in reserve with glasses on the top high shelf. Lost bottle openers are a thing of the past too since this one features one welded to its side. Food-wise, four shallow stainless steel trays are ideal for condiments, while a cutting board with a wire grate slide allows for basic chef chores without creating a mess. There’s plenty of backup bins and storage space thrown in for larger two-liter bottles, dry goods or anything else you’d like to have on hand but protected from the elements — fireworks anyone? The entire station rests on 4 heavy-duty casters for easy portability if you decide not to go the built-in route (also available). Million dollar view of the Rockies not included.

Maybe I've just had some bad tie clips, but they always end up crooked. Otherwise, theyw ould be fine.

'55 custom T-Birds

2 Attachment(s)
Zolland created a series of renderings of a 1955 Ford Thunderbird for a client. The car will be built from the body and components of a 2009 Ford Mustang, but will be completely remodeled to resemble the classic lines of the T-Bird - proving that the reverse can be true: from the new can come the old.

The person who sent me the photo didn't give me any information, so I had to put my google-fu to the test.

Apparently it's a 1948 Norman Timbs Special.

Quote:

Mechanical engineer Norman E. Timbs created this dramatic streamliner in the 1940s. Timbs resume already included work on Indianapolis winners, such as the famous 'Blue Crown Specials.' It took him over two years to complete the car at a cost of $10,000. The body was created in aluminum by Emil Diedt at a cost of $8,000.

Timbs was influenced by the Auto Union Type C and Mercedes-Benz W25 Avus Streamlined GP racers from the 1930s. His shape is a close approximation to these cars, the GP cars of their day.

The Special uses a 1948 Buick straight 8 engine, with dual 'Compound' carburetors and dual exhausts, to propel the 2,200 lb. car to 120 mph. The engine resides in a tube chassis, behind the driver. The chassis is built from four-inch tubes, which kick up over the rear axle. The smooth shape is long, low and sports an underbelly pan. A one-piece rear panel opens to reveal the entire rear end of the chassis.

The car was discovered in the desert pretty much intact in 2002. It was restored by Dave Crouse.
