What was the before and after backlash readings?

Did you pattern the gears?

What did you figure out with the torquing of the ring gear bolts? The lock-tite and oil question.

The backlash was ck’d on the oem unit & was .004”
This was after draining fluid from diff, standing upright (pinion down) & removing rear cover...stub shafts still in place.
After re-assembling & dropping unit back in housing (new side bearings & thrust washers on same sides as they were removed from) & reading was .006” (this is with no oil coating on gears yet & stub’s not popped back in place).
Prior to putting new unit in, mike’d the thrust washers & ring gear side was a hair thinner than other side.
Removed bearing caps & raised unit up, then swapped sides of washers.
Backlash reading was .005” (pattern looked the same & this should snug up a tad after the 75/140 moves around in there).
The ring gear bolts are an odd size (m13x1.25) :icon14:
Removing all loctite & cleaning up everything was a bit tedious, but got it right...after seating gear to unit; torqued to the initial ft.lb & then turned additional 35* while testing with torque wrench.
Was hitting the mark at 110ft.lbs.
Threads received high strength thread locker only (no oil :shakes head:)
Had adequate tools to hold Wavetrac unit steady, while Madwi was hitting the final torque w/wrench (2-man job without clamping down Wavetrac)
Unit is built with 2 flats on each side, underneath side bearings (52mmx14mm) so holding steady with appropriate tools helped,,,but still took some umph to hit the mark with every ring gear bolt (criss-cross pattern)
PS: ring gear bolts were cleaned well, using anti-corrosion oil :icon17:

We ended up with quite a storm last night about the time I left work. I had to drive a bit NW of Philly to pick up a couple air nailers, and by the time I was a few miles into the drive, the rain was coming down in sheets. The wind started a bit later, but although I'll need to collect my porch furniture cushions from the yard later, no big branches fell. Always a plus when you are surrounded by trees.

Good Thursday to you all. We're almost there!

You got the stuff they were saying was going to hit us. Talking about 40 mph winds and sideways rain. We got a light drizzle and a few leaves blew around. :icon17:

I'z up.

40F and wet. Hi today 52F and wet. This will make the leaves change that much faster.

JC, I got about 110lbs too with that plus 30 to 36 degree torque spec.

I know. That is directly from the manual. :icon14: If I remember right. I lock-tited the threads and put oil under the head of the bolts.

Sounds like you need a yacht that you can anchor 12 nautical miles offshore. Not sure if you'll want to keep your Z though... :ugh2:

Great idea, but at some point, the yacht needs fuel and supplies. I'm leaning towards Ecuador, the climate is pretty good and I can live well on what I have. Of course, I'll have to sell the Z, it's not designed for mountain roads and a burro is better. :rofl2:

I'm still searching for info on the other things.... :bowrofl:

The older I get, the more the phrase "meet the new boss, same as the old boss" applies. Just pass the baton... it's all smoke n mirrors. :shakes head:

There is definitely a certain appeal to that. Drawbacks too, depending. I did a bit of reading on it a while back, and it turns out that our legal system is complex enough you need years to understand how to actually write a bill and pass it without huge unforeseen consequences. And while I'm mostly ok with our government failing to pass new bills, there are occasions where its possible it could be necessary.

That's a vast oversimplification but it took me from "WE NEED TERM LIMITS NOW!!" back to "OUR POLITICIANS ARE DOUCHEBAGS!!'

Years ago, I took some time and read "The Federalist Papers". The hard part was finding them (this was back in the Dark Ages, B.G.) Those lead me to more writings from the folks that penned the Constitution. It appears that the 'original idea' was to have people serve for a short time, then return to their respective towns and teach. I don't think they ever intended for us to have 'career politicians'.

I'm really tired of all the stupidity in Foggy Bottom right now. Sometimes I think the show "Designated Survivor" could be a vast improvement... :icon14:

I have the book, The Federalist Papers. It's the manual for the Constitution. If you read it. It's explains what the founding fathers was thinking. Those was some very bright people. Way ahead of their time.
