From what I've read on this, the speculation is this was a coup by company insiders to oust Ghosn. The two main reasons given were that Ghosn wasn't allowing for planning for his eventual replacement and the other reason was that Ghosn was trying to merge Renault and Nissan with Renault being the remaining name on the door.

Renault is hard to pronounce in any language. No wonder the merger was stifled.
