They had to open the valve and drain out the water and measure how much water was at each beam. We even had a spread sheet for it. What they didn't know. The senior operator on the shift before would go around and turn the 90deg elbow up. Open the valve and fill up the pipe nipple. Once full. Close the valve and turn the elbow back down. Some took weeks to catch on. The operations manager knew about it, and never said anything about it. It was a way for us to tell who would make it and who wouldn't. :rofl2:

One of the best was telling new guys they need to take an exhaust sample. They'd go to whatever vehicle and hold a plastic trash bag and fill it with exhaust..lol.. even funnier when that vehicle was an M1 tank... no exhaust pipe, but a big grill. They'd swipe at the air behind the tank trying to capture exhaust

So true.

Yea, I couldn't believe it. I didn't notice them missing until I was in the line to have my tech inspection for that days track session. It was not a good day as I didn't get to run because my car was too loud.

So... I picked up a miata last weekend as a temp replacement for the Z, then as a pure fun car once its back. And well, the previous owner is a tool. This car is such a hack-job its ridiculous. Im gonna photo dump, because i know a lot of you will get a kick out of what some people do and its sooooo sad.

2000 NB1, and the whole thing is held together with probably a gallon of RTV, and stuff is so ghetto rigged its scary. The worst was the crank gear key, was just a shaved down piece of metal to "Fit". And everything is 10x harder to pull off because instead of gasket material they just slathered it in RTV.

Holy carp on a stick Batman!!!

That is just horrible. That poor engine. Whoever owned/did that should not own or work on a vehicle ever again.

But, it’ll be that much better once you get it back together correctly. Love working on an engine and knowing you brought it back from The Land of Wind and Ghosts.

killrain 07-13-2018 12:16 PM

Whoever gets that reference at the end will get double repz today.
No googling!!!

:iagree:

That was pretty awful.

Like, i dont know ANYTHING about working on cars for the most part. This is the first time ive ever worked on a motor, but its a miata so its simple and plenty of guides/videos out there to follow. Just seeing this is horrifying, because whoever did this just slapped it together and then sold it.

Thankfully, with a small forturne spent on seals, gaskets, new hoses and other odds and ends, it should be a reliable-ish car for track, autox and the occasional late night top down fun run :D

Leingod 07-13-2018 01:01 PM

$520 shipped for the mirrors. Do I pull the trigger?

Test drive done, no leaks. Wheelwell cover black on, bumper back on. One more freeway and pull test drive and then under tray back on and I'll stick a fork in it!

I am going to take a shot in the dark with japanparts.com. Shipping costs are reasonable this time. RHDjapan was outrageous and getting the package was a nightmare.

The great thing is the fact that if you break something, it's not going to hurt you at all. It'll be a great learning experience to wrench on, parts are cheap enough, the platform has been around for ages with all knowledge available, and you'll do it the correct way after seeing everything current wrong. Congrats on the project car!

I'm gettin' tired. :icon14: Filled the water tank up in the motorhome. Inspected the gasket in the motorhome toilet. Have to replace it. :icon14: Srubbed 5 layers of bugs off the front of the motorhome. Thing some were small birds. Have to use rubbing compound to get some of the bugs off. Little f!@kers are under the paint. Wash and waxed to Grand Cherokee. Being pulled behind the motorhome. It got covered in dust and crap.:icon14: Anyone want to wash and wax my motorhome? I'll pay you, but I'm cheap
