That QT installer just be a PC thing.. it comes preinstalled on mac anyways but I've used VLC as default since forever.

VLC is what I have set to default on all the PCs in the house.

The battle has been won. CopyTrans software lets me import the videos straight to a networked HDD that now has to be found by stupid apple tv box.
