OK remember the kids say that the game board is the town? Will's brother Johnathan, says something about the area affected is only about a mile in diameter. I have re-watched all the episodes a few times, I have a couple more theories. One I am going to have to post somewhere and see if my predictions come true in the later seasons :icon17:

Season 1 episode 5 about 16:38 into the episode Johnathan talks about his theory on the range of the monster. hawkins dept of energy is the epicenter where 11 opened the portal.
Season 1 Ep 6, about 10 minutes in. Johnathan and the girl talk about how to lure the monster out. They talk about how it feeds and it can possibly smell blood like a shark, since it shows up when blood is spilled.
