1) dunno what coolant smells like
2) even tho i've changed my oil tons of times, idk what the oil pan looks like off the top of my head. I just look for the bolt on the back of a pan that usually has an arrow and "oil" written on it.

meh, they break cause people are pushing their cars too hard without understanding the car.

dont do things u dont understand and keep a decent margin... then ull be safe. there was nothing in the data dat suggested my engine was running too lean or even remotely close to knock/damage.

u should download the service manual and just study it. coolant smells like sweet candy. just open ur reservoir on ur Z and take a sniff.

Step 1: Find where coolant is. The plastic tube thingie with blue stuff in it I think

Step 2: Taste test!

I was right. I figured the white container in any car was the coolant. I've never even had to fill mine before. So this'll be fun when I do my 30k fluid swap.

Yet my generation buys more physical books to read. I prefer having a hard copy of important documents. I see more old people nowadays with an iphone at the dinner table then 20 yr olds.

yah, da coolant level u want it to be around the middle mark as it will rise when the engine is hot. the Z's reservoir has a overflow tube though which i thought was pretty cool.

its funny how they have the operating max and min levels on like the steering fluid but none on the coolant tank.

I see more zombies at the mall than in The Walking Dead!

They are all not old enough to drink adult beverages. :owned:

I stare at a PC screen all day. I don't want to spend my hours outside of work doing the same. I'd rather break something on the Z and learn to fix it by asking you guys in a freaked out moment on this thread.

I thought the coolant tank was the min/max tank.....

My cobalt and my Dads MDX have a white tank with min/max on it. Always figured that was the coolant tank. 0_o

yah there are min/max marking but if u look at the steering fluid reservoir there is a warm and cold min/max mark.

I have some investigating and reading to do tonight. The manual is still downloading.

kenchan 04-27-2016 10:25 AM

anyway, after u do the coolant drain/fill (and burping the system) keep the coolant in the middle of the min/max marks. den u wont need to worry about overflow.. coolant turns into a white powdery mess once dry. i hate the smell of burnt coolant too..

Next step, figure out where coolant tank is under car and drain. To the still downloading manual I go!!!!

Who the hell let me buy a sports car with 1% knowledge on how to fix ANYTHING.

I sorta just want to take a weekend and do a full fluid swap on everything in the car. Really learn where everything is. Just afraid i'll drain something and either not be able to refill it or refill it with something incorrect.

Leon: Filled collant!
Kenchan: datz your tranny dummy

I was told by two doctors I was not a candidate for corrective eye surgery. But hopefully the way my vision is going in 5 yrs I will be a candidate for it.

at least on the Z there is good distance between the engine oil plug and tranny oil plug and use different tool bits. on some subaru's ive worked on it is like they are right next to each other so ive seen folks drain their tranny fluid instead of their engine oil. :rofl2: wtf..

That's what I am petrified of doing some day. I quad checked myself 5 times when doing the GF's versa oil change. I'm a freaking hypochondriac still it seems.

its good to be on the nervous side. things are most dangerous for sophomore types dat think they know wat they're doing and fak up. those are usually da kids dat work at them jiffy lubes and such.

kenchan 04-27-2016 10:52 AM

also at dealer quick change bays. those are usually just novice teens non-ASE certified folks doing the work.

not dat u need such certification to do routine maintenance.

Well hopefully this manual helps me. $100 for full radiator hose swap from Z1. I'm tempted.

Leingod 04-27-2016 11:00 AM

I now know what burping the coolant means!! One a 50/50 blend is added, turn the car on and blast the heat. With the funnel and coolant still in the funnel, it should burp out bubbles being flushed from the hoses.
