what a productive day. i'm ready for 3:30 and then going to attempt to workout. i'm beat

Leingod 03-02-2016 01:51 PM

Why am I so stupidly confused about jack points on the Z? For the sides, do they go on the little lips with cutouts on them, or directly (behind) the lip things on the flat portion of steel from photos I've seen? The front is on the "nipple" from what I can tell which is behind the plastic cover for the oil pan.

how da fak did I ever jack on the Z last year twice for oil changes? 0_o

the actual jack point on the side is the hump behind the pinch rail. i place a piece of wood on my hydraulic jack platform and place the weight just behind the two cutouts.

if you want to use those for jack stands u need to lift the car from the front under the engine area where u see the cross brace jack point.

Which is why race ramps are good... I use a 2x4 like kenchan does to lift Belle from the sides, then place a jack stand under the cross brace.

kenchan 03-02-2016 01:57 PM

which reminds me... my STI's jack point on the sides (front) is much deeper than the Z and G so i need to get a thicker piece of wood. :ugh: last time i lifted it my jack's platform was barely but noticeably hitting the pinch rail..

i guess i could glue and screw the two pieces of wood together and use dat..

a project for me before the wheel swap again. :D

I looked at an old photo of mine. I used a jack on the pinch rail and literally right beside the jack, i placed my jackstand. Both probably on the pinch rail knowing my dumbness. My current jack doesn't fit under the front of the car. Was looking into getting a low profile jack.

Do you have a link of the appropriate length i'd need sicne I read a lot of people hit the front chin on them.

Ghostvette 03-02-2016 02:00 PM

A set of race ramps are next on the list. Since the space in the garage at my apartment is kinda narrow, it will be easier to back the car out, set the ramps, then drive up to change the oil. Now to figure out where to store them....

kenchan 03-02-2016 02:00 PM

u guys use the puck? i was thinking about getting one dat was pre-cut.. but havent

yah, raceramps are the shitts. they are excellent quality, light weight, does not slide around, easy to wash, etc. im going to be putting my wife's dd on there too maybe next weekend to wash the undercarriage real nice.

RR-56-56" and use the RR-EX-12 56"Xtender

kenchan 03-02-2016 02:24 PM

without the xtender the ings would hit the ramp.

Masterbeatty 03-02-2016 02:25 PM

I use left over base board pieces to lift mine up. Nails and glue work good so far.

yah, dont place the weight of the car on the pinch rail as the rail will bend.

u can source a low profile aluminum hydraulic jack at harbor freight. i have two of them.

Was thinking of taking a run to harbor freight anyways. A low profile for under $100 or raceramps for $250+.

kenchan 03-02-2016 02:30 PM

btw, leon... i call the pinch weld 'rails', but just letting u know the proper terminology is pinch weld.

mine was like $79 at the time. it's blue housing. i just bought two of them since they were so cheap.

So it's the metal to the inside of the pinch rails where the stands should be placed. Got it. I'll source a low profile jack so i can jack from the front nipple area.

I always called them rails on my other cars also. They're long singular pieces, so basically rails. :ughdance:

Leingod 03-02-2016 02:37 PM

Or get hockey pucks on ebay with slits in them. jack car up with hockey puck slits resting over the rails. Like an upside down monorail!

Leingod 03-02-2016 02:37 PM

Fak am I clueless. kernchan hates me.....

yah.. same reason why i call them rails too cause most people go  when u say pinch weld.

but then go  when u tell them pinch rails.

u can. datz wat i was thinking about getting too originally, but some of them the slot is too shallow and the rail would hit it anyway. :icon17:

like on my STI, i would need to get a REALLY deep one or it wont clear the rail. in such case, using a piece of wood is easier.

i can tell u dat ive used a piece of wood (oak) as adapter for over 25yrs? longer? with no issue.

so im pretty sure it works. :D but the pucks are nice. they come in all sorts of colors too.

my jackstand has a narrow flat top with rubber shoes which fit perfectly on the hump behind the pinch rails.. so ive never had the issue of worrying about the car slipping off the jackstands. but for oil change and most work under the car, just use ramps where u can. much safer, faster.
