my theory when it comes to life in general (i.e. wife/work/etc.):

ask for forgiveness, not permission.

Every part I bought for my car costs $300. Volk TE37 with tires? $300. Nismo intake, exhaust, sway bars, and differential cover? $300. Work CR2P with tires? You guessed it, $300. When it worked the first few times, the lie slowly became a part of me. Now I still tell her, "It's only $300" even if she isn't asking. I really need to stop :shakes head:.

I always feel like I'm laundering money when I buy parts. It got to a point when she said, "just tell me how much you saved".

Now I have a final push to finish the build and she knows it. Told her the only things after this are the expendable items (rotors/pads/tires...)

I think, this is the best way of putting it. "Money Laundering". Next time I'll tell the wife, I'm money laundering.

I "support" her, when she wants to do certain things. Like recently she said a wanted to enter a pageant. Not a big one, but still. Expensive non the less. So I "encouraged" her to do it right..so she spent like 800 bucks on dresses and alterations and crap... She can't hold it against me when I buy new wheels....

I'm sure if we just put 100% of our money in a joint account we'd take turns complaining about how pointless the other person's wants were, because I don't see a point in having more than 2 pairs of shoes and she doesn't see a point in having more than one car, but luckily we don't have to do that.

We have a similar system. The most important thing, imo, is to have a system that both people are happy with. Once that is accomplished, a lot of "money issues" vanish and life becomes much simpler and more enjoyable.

That depends on many aspects, how much you make is a big one and how much you spend on other 'stuff'. If you only have one hobby (car parts) that its easier. Also i noticed its better not to say anything just buy and see how much crap you get, then you know what your spending/bitching threshold is...yes its a science

dude its a bait and switch scam...run! i'm not even kidding

Team_STILLEN 09-14-2015 07:11 PM

I usually just tell my wife I'm getting parts. When we are doing house projects I run in buy her as a heads up she doesn't think I'm spending money on car parts that was intended for the house. On the other hand, when I buy computer stuff or give money to my brother she throws a fit LOL.

My wife's an accountant. It doesn't matter if I ask her. She knows.

She doesn't understand the mod bug, but she did buy me an RJM clutch pedal assembly for my birthday a couple of years ago without my asking. So I definitely did something right :icon17:

Yeah, my wife does our household accounting so she knows more about how much money I have than I do.
