No OEM is going to pull the plug on a new car the first year no matter how bad the car may be. There is just to much money involved. Just look at the Edsel.............. It was 4 model years before Ford cut it off and it lost money from the get go.
Hey, nobody wants to see it.

Nissan was making a profit when the 350Z came out.

Ford cut off the Edsel after 4 years, but Ford was a cash cow then - and Nissan just lost $2 Billion.

We still bow to the King.

Cool mid to late 1950's there was an economic down turn

Remember in the mid to late 1950's there was an economic down turn and yes Ford had some cash. But not near enough to knock GM or Chrysler out of the Market. GM was still kicking the $hit out of Ford and Chrysler back in the day and owned over 50% or the market. Chrysler closed out the DeSoto in 57 and Studebaker left the US at the end of 62. Packard through in the towel in 55 and was bought out by Studebaker (which was a mistake). Poor Nash wobbled back and forth for several more years when it became AMC and was finely sucked up by Chrysler. But enough of a History lesson for now.

Just remember one thing. In the post war days Honda, Toyota, Nissan and the other Japaneses car were all subsidized by the Government for a very long time. If the truth be known they may very well still be.
