modded stock intake box?
Has anyone modded the stock boxes? When I had my (B5) S4 the was a stock air box mod where you a cut the bottom of the box off- part that faced the wheel well- was wondering if this would be something that we could do and pick up some HP was was cleaning my KN's yesterday and was noticing how small the intake boxes port was?
|
from what I have read on this board, the general concensus seems to be the stock boxes are very good and no mod would improve them without upgrading to another system entirely...

I ve read that also but I have Z1 tubes with drop ins was just thinking about cutting the bottom of the box off to pull in some more air?

The stock boxes are more than adequate so just doing the less restrictive drop ins along with post maf tubes to straighten the air? is all you're going to need unless of course you spend some money on a cai. If you still feel you want to cut up your boxes for no real gains? By all means do its your car. :ugh2: |
Thanx tips , LOL no sure was just thinking out loud :)
|
stillen gen 3 , enough said. yes its costly around 550, but the pull you get from it low rpms you feel the difference, around 4-5k, omg it screams. well worth it.
|
Had them already loved then just can't see spend the 400 for them , heck I'll make my own before I do that , thank you tho . :)
And would but the Takedas before those again ( had those also) |
R2C intakes looks clean and are OEM quality.

I just modified a set to include CNC'd velocity stacks... testing coming soon.

They should make more power, but we'll see... If all goes well, I'll post pics of the build and lots of details; if they don't, I'll just report back with that as the conclusion. If I get another 5 whp out of it, I'll consider it a success, but again, we'll see. |

don't cut into your boxes. the stock intake is a cold air intake. lots of aftermarket intakes make zero power, and some even lose power. you need a 500 dollar intake if you want to make real gains but then you're only really gaining top end.
|
Eh I Still might and do something "weird" and see what happens, An "If" I pull the trigger in a cold air is only $360. Stillens are over priced- Takeda's do the same for over a $100 less. I had them both and made the same power.
|
the only problems with the stock intake system are the narrow wavey accordion pipes and the fact that they're huge and hard to insulate against heat due to their size.
it depends what you are after - more sound or more performance? as for ram air for our cars, i'm not convinced it makes a noticeable difference. i've got probably the biggest ram air setup together with Stillen G3 intake and to be honest i cant notice any difference made by ram air (ie. slight forced induction effect). The only difference my ram air scoops makes is that the scoops block off heat from the radiator so air temps stay pretty stable and cool. That alone gives me better throttle response due to less timing pull. |

If that also falls through, come hell or high water I'll schedule time for the following weekend. I really want to test these out! :excited: |
Look for these man, Wondering "since" I did mod mine this weekend wondering if I'm going to plumb a pipe to it with the velocity stack at the end
|
Modshack modded stock boxes back in 09. I think papo_salsa had this mod. Shack determined the box mod was the least effective part of his concoction. The post MAF and drop ins or the cai had better results.

I'm tentatively scheduled to get on the dyno Friday night. I'll keep everybody posted :) Quote:
I was tempted to do that myself, but I decided to just wait for the dyno. |

Dyno results = nil. No gains, nada.
Sadly, this project is a bust :( If anyone is interested in experimenting where I left off, shoot me a PM and I'll sell you my v-stacks and other odds and ends. |
That stinks THANX for the efforts :)
I would have been interested on the V stacks but your bolt on, I am using an external intake pipe to feed the stock air box and was thinking on using one on the end, But I was looking at the ram air duct and placing them behind the grill. Sill looking around. |

Ok so been thinking a bit on what I was going to do. Finally bought some piping and air ducts, The ducts are either going behind the grill or I'm going to cut the front lower grills and mount these behind them in between my LED fogs, From the side on my air box where I cut them out( Side in the wheel well area) What you guys think? Lower Grills( I have a NON sport 09 Sedan) or behind the front grill AKA Still and Takeda? An benefit feed the box from two different spots? I know I may need more piping depending where I go but its a start.

From what I have seen/heard, flow is not the problem with the stock setup - it's not perfect, but it's not that bad - it's the fact that it's so freaking hot under the hood. Put your efforts into getting colder air into the system (CAI of some type; what it looks like ANMVQ is doing) and keeping the air cool until it gets to the combustion chamber (insulation). YMMV

yea we'll see still not sure I'm going to cover this opening or run this right the front of the air box. area I cut is below.
|
ok almost everything is here I will have pics tonight of all the parts, and I did a quick test fit last weekend and things looked good, BTW I'm mounting the adapter plate right the the rad support inline with the stock intake duct and going from there to behind the grill. Only will have to move the horn a bit :) We'll see

Ok hers what's going in, :)
|
Ok s I started the install last night as today I'm driving the wife around for a fitness show ;)
I started by mounting the adapter plates to the radiator support over the stock air ducking tunnel with self tapping screws, the in attached the 90 degree elbow an ran the 3inch intake piping hich wind up don behind the front bumper support ( I didn't like them down there just above the skid plate. And I also couldnt mount the CF air scoopes I bought. So I remived the intake piping and just attached the scoops right to the elbows. Looks good and I can hear them sucking air so they're working LOL. I took some pics but was dark and started to rain I take some more tomorrow. But here's a few for now . I also bougt a aluminim blade for my table saw I'm going to make some more changes so stay tuned ;) |
Phone won't let me adds pics I'll ipdate in an hour when I'm home getting an oil change :/
|
Good to hear, ill be waiting for pics!
Also, let us know if the butt dyno reports any gains :icon17: |
Looks good, and good luck -- but do you have a dyno from before they were added...?
|
I do have a dyno but from a place I will never go to again (Horror story on here) , I Was think of going out an get a log or 2 to see the MAF readings
