Umm, yeah. Despite my readings being from a muffler delete, I think we would fail miserably. The microphone has to be 20 INCHES from the exhaust outlet. That 96dB was from about 300 feet away (watch the video again). It's probably 130dB at the tips (all I know is I did't want my ears anywhere near that close when I had the muffler off). Even with just the Stillen CBE now, I think I'd still fail to meet those guidelines.
Hell, I bet engine noise alone (forget the exhaust) would be over 95dB at 20 inches from the tips. |

Great thread! Look forward to some results.............................

Stillen CBE with ERZ High Flow Cats. 89dB at WOT inside the car

Hopefully we can get at least one/some NISMO owner(s) to jump in on this test. I am curious as to how loud the stock setup is and how it compairs to the "legal" limits. I won't be picking mine up until late March at the earliest, but I will try to get a reading at that time.

I will get number for the Invidia Gemini CBE tomorrow. Next Saturday I get my ERZ HFC's on so I will post those numbers too.

wow 3 pages and 1 post of an exhaust measured. whats so hard about getting the device, sticking it 20 inches from your exhaust and testing it? great thread idea wasted by lazy people. really? worried about the cost of it? 50 too high? YOU OWN A 370 Z FOR CHRISTS SAKE, so you can obviously afford a 50 dollar device. I would do mine, but you can look at ARKs site...... already done.

Why no dl a dbtest from your phone app store for free. Sure they are not the best and every phone brand/model will record a little measure a different db. Why not also inclue your phone brand, model and which db app u used? The idea of free anything will hopefully get more people to participate = better survey.
So make a standard as far as recording distance, facing x way, rev to x rpm, in front of left exhaust, in open lot, in garage or whatever. |
I have a radio shack meter that only reads to 126db. I did 20" from the tip at tip level. I have a eBay LTH, top speed 2.5" OD X pipe with Helmholtz resonators installed at the X pipe to LTH connection, 2.5" ID 15.5" inline resonators in the 2.5" OD mid pipes and 2.5" OD straight pipes to 4" tips. My cars gutted so in cabin is louder. No complaints about the setup, no drone, mild rasp if you rev it when the rpms are coming down and mild hiss on decel also. Normal street driving it sounds stock quite! Above 5500rpm I challenge a better/exotic/raw/mean/amazing sound.
Cold start up, you know the first 20 seconds of really loudness, 116-121db Cold warm up idle, 112-115db Warm idle, 91-93db In cabin highway windows up at 70mph, 93db In cabin highway windows up at 80mph, 97-100db In cabin windows down, 113db loudest I could get to redline Outside free rev again at tips to 5k fuel/ignition cut, over 126db max Loudest I could scream, 118db Scary thing is before the Helmholtz I'd say everything was 10-20db higher!! Might do drive by's with the wife later. |

I did just the opposite. I bought the Berk CBE and drove the car a while, but the sound was still too mellow. Once I installed the Berk HFC's the car note really "woke up". To me, the sound is perfect at every RPM. Nice tone at idle, great sound at full throttle, and just enough character at highway speed. No drone ever, but a little "hiss" and "burble" at decel. Sounds almost exotic at all speeds. This is a great thread, but I will have to wait until spring to get any decibel readings. We have a great sound meter at work, but with the car in storage, I'm afraid all I will get now is her snoring under the cover :rofl2:. |

Im somewhere around these numbers. Im full straight pipe other than a 4"x12" resonator. no cats or mufflers. No complaints either. Cops leave me alone...somehow. I think most just think its a nicer car than it really is. People that hear me before they see me think im driving a 6 figure car. |
