Nismo Axle Back Custom Exhaust With 5" Burned Tips

2 Attachment(s)
Hi guys,

So, I am on a quest for a custom exhaust. I believe the Nismo exhaust is plenty good at this stage. I am not trying to gain horsepower (I will go Turbo eventually), just a better/louder exhaust sound.

I like the FI and Motordyne sound, but those are cat-back systems.

The AAM Short Tails sounds pretty good to me, but the 4" exhaust tips are too small for a Nismo.

I found a couple axle-back systems from Top Speed and Megan Racing, but again, the exhaust tips are too small.

So, here are my questions and I hope you can help:

- Should the pipes be resonated or muffled, or straight?
- If the answer to the question above is 'resonated' or 'muffled', should I have a shop custom bend the pipes and put it all together or should I just buy one of the axle-back systems mentioned above and have the shop swap the tips?

Attached is a pic of the tips I am getting and an example of the axle-back systems I have found.

Thanks! :)

Go with one of the axlebacks if you like the specific sound they make and just want to change the tips. If you don't exactly love the sound you can always try to have a custom made one. The design of the axleback should depend on how loud you want it to be and what sound you want.
More bends, resonated = quieter, more civil, clean/muffled tone
Less bends in piping, non resonated = louder, more aggressive, raw/raspy tone

I agree with your choice with the tips though! Pictures when done :)

Thanks C2.

I will order the AAM short tails (hopefully they can sell me just the pipes) and the Modordyne tips. I think this will come out nice both sound and looks wise :)

Will post pics once done.

not sure but if you sent the tips to AAM - i bet they could put them on the short tails... just a thought

obwebpro 11-04-2012 01:42 PM

Randy, I had the same idea but I think it might be safer to have the shop put the tips on while on the car to make sure the they do not stick out too far out or in.

Really interested in doing this with my Topspeed pro1 exhaust.. The tips just aren't aggressive enough for me. I love these 5" burnt tips an for 99$ don't think that's bad.. Question though when you do have these tips installed are you going to have them welded on or do they simply stay in place with clamps/screws ?

I'm on the same boat with the Topspeed exhaust... $99 for the pair? Where can I order these? Thanks

To OP ... Your on the right track man... I just sold my nismo exhaust because it was just to quiet for my tastes, but I loved the 5" tips... They look much better IMO... I plan on doing custom 5" tips as well... Good luck and post pics!

obwebpro 11-05-2012 07:58 PM

Who sells the tips for $99? I was quoted $125 per tip by Motordyne.

ts-c63 11-05-2012 10:14 PM

From looking at the motordyne website it says $99

obwebpro 11-05-2012 11:28 PM

Oh yes, $99 is for the 4.5" tip. $125 is for the 5". Going to the shop tomorrow to find out about custom made pipes and installation pricing.

ts-c63 11-06-2012 08:57 AM

Ahh ok I stand corrected haha.. Can u pm the link if there is one for the 5"

We make our short tails with clamp on style tips now (same tips, just not welded on) this gives users the ability to adjust a few inches, whether they want it flush or a bit of poking out

We have 5" clamp on style tips we use for our GT-R exhaust, I'm not 100% how this will look on a 370z though

the reason why I've never offered this to anyone was because I think it might look a bit tacky.. but hey it might actually look really cool. We have a 370z shop car but no nismo rear bumper to reference or test fit

obwebpro 11-06-2012 12:22 PM

I have ordered the AAM Short Tails and the 5" tips (polished) used on the GT-R.

Thank you Khoi for the clarifications and great sale experience!

I will post pictures and videos once installed.

Wonder how the 5" would look on a non nismo

Sales@AAMComp 11-06-2012 01:50 PM

just shipped it out! can't wait to see what this looks like

Thanks for the call Olivier

unfortunately I have no control over the tips look. They come from our supplier like that

Hotrodz 11-06-2012 02:11 PM

I think they will look awesome. Stock Nismo tips are just over 4.75 inches. Can't wait to see them.

Would you be willing to test fit those tips on the shop car ? Since its not a nismo I would really love to see what they will look like on a regular 370z rear! I'm inserted in these tips.

Sales@AAMComp 11-07-2012 09:13 AM

ok guys just slapped on a set of tails with the gt-r tips, it fits way too snug, as the regular 370z bumper is not cut out big enough to fit 5" tips, it MIGHT work if you extend the hangers but still I think the tip just looks too big for the cutout.

pics in a second

I'm confident these tips will look good on a nismo rear since their bumper is cut out for an already big muffler tip!

wyatt51 11-07-2012 11:22 AM

that's awesome, i was wondering when someone would do this, looks hella good

Allright,

AAM Short Tails and 5" tips are installed.

The install:
Once the stock muffler was out (I should have done what others have done which is unbolt the hangers, jeez), the install was a breeze.

The quality:
Everything is top notch (thank you Khoi).

The fit:
I think we all had doubts about the 5" possibly not fitting on the Nismo. The fit is actually perfect. I did have to add some stainless steel spacers to the left hanger but I suspect this is from the stock exhaust alignment. The tips stick out equally as well.

The sound:
Well, it is amazing. It is loud but not insane (I come from a V8 M3 with similar setup so maybe I am partial). Cruising is just a tad louder than stock. Accelerating is loud but good loud. Downshifting is simply the best. Once thing to note, none of the videos online do this exhaust any justice, the sound is much deeper in real life (which is a good thing).

Overall I am very happy with this setup. The only thing I will change is the tips since Khoi did not have the burned tips in stock. So in a couple of week, these tips will be for sale if anyone is interested.

Sales@AAMComp 11-09-2012 11:08 AM

Olivier, awesome! Do you mind making a separate thread and just copy and paste everything you just posted? I'd hate to see that review get lost in this thread

ps it's going to look awesome with the titanium burnt tips! Can't wait for them to come in!

obwebpro 11-09-2012 11:25 AM

Khoi, I was thinking the same thing, I will start a new thread.

EDIT: here is the link to the new thread.

Lezydesign 07-07-2014 01:48 AM

would the 5" fit on the amuse bumper?

Elan 07-07-2014 09:28 AM

I have the 5" tips on my short tails. Looks amazing!! :)

DamnThatZGuy 03-08-2017 12:28 AM

I really wish AAM would also make 4.5" tips and not jump straight from 4" to 5".
