Hey guys need some opinion here. I'm starting to get tempted to go with HFC paired with the non resonated CBE...
Anyone living in the los angeles area want to chime in if i'll have any issues with LEO pulling me over?
Thanks.
This isn't limited to people in CA either, if you have HFC paired with the non resonated CBE, your opinions are also welcome :)
Thanks again.

m4a1mustang 09-29-2010 03:29 PM

HFCs + non-resonated CBE = LOUD.

phelan 09-29-2010 04:49 PM

by all means get HFCs and a non-resonanted CBE. then stay as far away from Rin as you can, they'll think it's coming from me and pull me over. :)

hahaha don't be skurred!

EDIT:...Would'nt it be great if you got the heat for someone another Andrew did :)
What type of setup do you have? Do you get looks from LEOs?

phelan 09-29-2010 05:08 PM

 lol

HFCs + amuse exhaust. when i went F.I., I had HFCs + 18" CF resonators. sounded gorgeous.

i get looks all the time from LEOs, so don't go by my word...

Oh ya, i bet you get looks from LEOs because of the kit and exhaust.
LOL gotta ask someone who's car doesn't look like yours. maybe Trips since he doesn't have a bodykit.

Okay, so I've started the install (well, prep really). First, I'm embarrassed to say that I could not get the Z up on ramps. I used to put RWD cars on ramps all the time when I was HS/College age (that was, er, some years ago). But then again, that was metal ramps on a gravel driveway. They didn't move under the torque of the wheels like the Rhino Ramps I have did under the Z. So, I figured I'd do the raise 1 corner at a time technique (with the fronts up on 2 sandwiched 2X12"s). My old 2.25 ton Craftsman trolley jack failed on the first corner.

So, a trip to Sears and some $$ later I came home with a low profile 3 ton lightweight floor jack. Got under the pumpkin and got the rear up using just the lower part of the handle to lift it and slid the ramps under the wheels. So far so good.

I was able to loosen all the 14mm bolts on the system. I used both a half inch breaker bar with a impact socket, or a 3/8 bar with a deep socket. They were very tight. I needed to lie on my side and use my foot against the breaker bar on the center pipe bolts. But they are all loose and ready for removal now.

I also unpacked the exhaust. What a thing of beauty! The box had been dented and cracked by UPS, but there was no damage to the pipes due to the spectacular packing job of Tony's crew (I suspect he employs Santa's elves in the off season). The instructions are very clear as well.

Unfortunately work and predicted tropical rains will keep me from doing anything tomorrow. So I'll post more after I've got the CBE installed.

Congrats ProfessorDave...Your day has finally arrived...Can't wait to hear your reviews...

6spd 09-30-2010 05:07 PM

I took my FI exhaust off today and is officially for sale. Anyone not willing to wait the waiting/build time should PM me. The link is in my sig.

ProfessorDave 09-30-2010 08:54 PM

Anybody have a picture of what part of the heat sheild I'll be bending? A search brings up some pictures of the shield cut, but I can't tell how it is different from stock. Maybe it will be obvious to me once I get back under the car, but we're going on 4" of rain with no end in sight. So I'm just sitting here obsessing over the directions.

It will be real obvious, it's a small bend, nothing to worry about...

ProfessorDave 09-30-2010 09:34 PM

Thanks Xan. Now I can switch to worrying about the performance of my sump pump.

XwChriswX 09-30-2010 10:13 PM

Dave, when I go to work tomorrow, I'll take a pic for you of what it should look like, with the exhaust mounted... But I won't be able to upload it till I get home tomorrow afternoon...

ProfessorDave 09-30-2010 10:26 PM

Thanks! While I had planned to get the exhaust installed tomorrow morning, I don't see that happening given the forecast. Probably will have to wait until the afternoon or sat.

Can you go into details? Why are you worried about that.

Ok Dave, I'll be sure to get some pics up for you tomorrow afternoon

I should have clarified - the sump pump in my basement :icon17: (because we've had so much rain here). I'm not worried about the oil sump.

I'll give an update on the install later, as I'm sure the suspense is killing all those reading this thread!:rofl2:

CBE Installed!

Despite the lingering rain (over 5 inches, not as bad as some of you guys in FL and the Carolinas) I went ahead with the removal of the old system and the install of the FI cat back. Everything went very smoothly. I followed the tips posted elsewhere in this thread (such as unbolting the hangers, bending the heat shield). The FI system went in perfectly - awesome fitment! There is no need to adjust the tips (I'll post a pic later, after it stops effing raining). The only issue I encontered was not putting the heat wrap low enough on the fuel line (I should have placed it closer to the evap canister). No biggie - I'll hit the auto parts store later and get some more.

The sound is AMAZING! It changes tone (and volume of course) at different RPMS. At cruising there is NO DRONE I have the 12" res, SS mufflers, stock cats). I took a 15 minute spin, and will take a couple more after it cools down, per the instructions Tony included.

I can't say enough about how positive the whole experience has been dealing wth Tony. The guy helped me make the right choice of options, and shipped the system to me 2 full weeks ahead of schedule. Thanks FI and Tony!:hello:

I'll post a pic or two later, and some more impressions for those of you still waiting (and drooling) for your systems.

uck another person who had perfect fitment.

Question about hiss

After a few heat/cold cycles of running the Z since the FI install this morning, I detect a slight (faint) high pitched hiss on decel. Nothing like what you hear from HFCs. Just wondering is this is normal, or perhaps the sign of a leak (I always associated leaks with a ticking sound). The sound seems to be coming from area of the stock cats.

Just wanted to get some opinions before I jack up the car and crawl back under.

tjlazer 10-01-2010 04:04 PM

like a farting sound? It's normal.

LOL that's a good way of putting it. My old car had that "farting" sound and on cold days you can actually see my car farting. :roflpuke2:

ProfessorDave 10-01-2010 04:17 PM

More of a squeal, or whirring hiss

m4a1mustang 10-01-2010 04:19 PM

Yeah, that's totally normal. Our engine coupled with an X pipe = hiss on decel.

If you ever listen to some of the Zs without a crossover pipe (like the AAM Competition 1st generation CBEs) they don't have any hiss at all. But if you've got an X there will be hiss!

Thanks Steve:tup: It is very faint, and does not bother me (unless it means I did something wrong with the install). The exhaust sounds so incredible!

red6spd 10-01-2010 05:21 PM

I get a little bit of hiss comming off 2000 rpm's. But u really got to listen for it. Cant wait to hear how loud the hiss gets when I get my non-resonated TP's installed in a week.

That's awesome. Wonder what kind of "extra" sounds are heard when LTHs are thrown in the mix.:eekdance:

Pics of the FI installed

OK guys, as promised here are a couple of pics of the rear of the Z with the FI CBE installed:

From straight on:

Absolutely man! I loved the In-Car angle you got! I think maybe since I have all my window's tinted, it might reduce some of the glare that you saw. Whens the next big one gonna be?
