I am currently running just a Y-Pipe (eBay). At idle virtually no noticeable difference. When revving, especially when pulling hard there is a noticeable increase in loudness, not a huge one but it is noticeable. The tone is also lowered slightly from stock, but again nothing compared to a full system.
It is for sure a move in the right direction for the exhaust note, but don't expect any miracles. On a side note, I have had no issues with eBay Y-pipe, had it on for over a year and the Z is my daily driver. I would have no qualms getting it again.
