no, I wasn't insinuating that at all. I have multiple times thought of doing the PMT's with the drop ins. Part of me REALLY wants to buy the R2C intakes, and even though it got equal power gains on a G37, there is not dyno info on them with our cars and as i've said IMO the 37's just much more open in the front end which is why it would get more air.

It would be a waste of money to get a tune with just intakes... this car seems to respond very well to mods. I am going to get all the NA power mods and then get the car tuned myself. It's not cheap to get a tune so I want to make it count.

This is what I thought as well but I had concerns with what Christian370z said below...

This is what I'm doing as well.

Intake - Needed (Have K&N's and MAF tubes right now, waiting for full intake)
Pulleys - Check
Oil Cooler - Check
Headers - Check
Exhaust - Check

Last mod needed before tune.

Thats what my plan was as well.

In my opinion as well as others, I would get the car tuned after installing G3 intakes. When I had my car tuned, the stock tune with G3s would run leaner than I am comfortable with and there was also some detonation which is something others have experienced as well.

After the tune, my A/F ratio was nice and safe across the board, the car ran smoother and I picked up another 5whp.

This was my main concern will the engine be safe as a daily driver with the G3's and no tune until I get the other mods mentioned about and tune it which could be months???

Who has had any issues or detontation running the G3's with no tune?

How long have most of you guys been riding your Z's with G3's and no tune?

It should be ok. I know a lot of people on here don't get a tune until they have an intake, exhaust, and HFC/Test Pipe. That's my plan, got the first 2 done and just need the last before I get tuned. Haven't had any issues yet.

I drove mine without a tune for a couple of weeks. The first pull on the dyno, both my tuner (Seb at SpecialtyZ) and I could hear/feel some detonation especially when looking at the A/F and power curves. I feel that everyone should get a tune after installing G3s, but I did it because I wanted to have 100% confidence in my car and having the chance of losing an engine over a couple hundred dollar tune seemed a bit silly.

I also gained at peak 5whp/14ftlbs after the tune, but I gained so much more under the curve especially with torque.

Get a tune, but wait to get all your bolt ons otherwise you'll have to get a retune. 310whp seems a little low but its probably a lower reading dynojet.

ill have to just buy the parts and not put em on i guess lol

Get them all... unhook the battery, put them on over a few days... drive right to the tuner... done! lol

NismoZ370 10-02-2011 08:32 PM

Ya but it will suck to watch the G3's sit in the box until i get the hfc and headers... would you guys keep the nismo exhaust or switch it out???

b1adesofcha0s 10-02-2011 09:28 PM

I'm pretty sure some aftermarket exhaust give more gains than the Nismo exhaust, and they sound better to. Up to you whether its worth it to spend the extra money on an aftermarket one.

I'd take it off and sell it for an F.I. or wait for Motordynes new exhaust... it shouldn't be to much longer. I guess he has one that will fit the Nismo?

NismoZ370 10-02-2011 11:45 PM

but i dont want it super loud just power gains so would that still apply

I have F.I. exhaust with 18" resonators and ART pipes and my set-up now that it's broken in, isn't very loud at all.

birdmanx1 10-03-2011 07:30 AM

I have the FI 18" + Berk HFCs + Motordyne M370 combo, now thanks to B1ades , I am keeping my eyes opened for the Stillen G3. Per B1ades, you wouldn't hear the G3 over the exhaust from inside but you do hear the air being sucked in from outside the car.

You mentioned something about loudness, you can always start with the Nissan exhaust, then get the berks, then G3 and go from there. This is close to what you should expect with the FI exhaust, Berks + Stillen G3

You know I can't decide on the 370 or the pulleys... I hear the pulleys can cause leaking oil and such if they aren't put on just right and i'm talking to Tony about the m370 a little more to see if that's a future mod I wanted to add.

Did you do all of your mods at once or did you add the M370 later? If so, how did it feel?

birdmanx1 10-03-2011 02:35 PM

Get both, the pulleys are cheap. I thoroughly went through all the reviews about the pulleys, the people who had issues with them kept coming back to bad installs. As soon as the pulleys were installed, the throttle response improved and the car felt preppier.

The M370 gave a deeper sound to the engine and serious torque & power in the midrange. I did the mods serially. The car sounds amazing and pulls hard (I easily spin the tires even with VDC on).
