George, can you answer my last question about the rattling...and I have one more...

Do these things really go bad ? I mean, I was told by a 350z guy who said he went thru a couple of sets in his 5 years with the car because they went bad...(not sure who's he was using) - So if true, is there some sort of maintenance to prevent stuff like that from happening ?

DannyGT 05-21-2009 02:23 PM

Ferris...Bueller...Anyone Anyone?

George check your PMs - Get at me!

I need to know this info based on your experiences and I have the money ready to put down...

t-ray 05-21-2009 02:35 PM

I don't see how a test pipe can "go bad". Yes, a weld can break - that happens to both TP's and HFC. But the test pipes are literally straight pipes - there is nothing in there. There is no "brick" or substrate like a HFC - so there is nothing to blow out or "go bad'.

DannyGT 05-21-2009 02:39 PM

No, its not JUST a test pipe...its resonated, hence why I ask if they find that the resonated part goes bad quicker than say a HFC...

semtex 05-21-2009 02:42 PM

But a resonator is still just expanded tubing, is it not? The thing is still hollow.

DannyGT 05-21-2009 02:44 PM

Is it? I dont know? I thought it had some sort of mesh in that expanded area...If thats the case than ya other than the welds there wouldnt be anything that goes bad...

I need confirmation from GTM

semtex 05-21-2009 02:50 PM

I had Kinetix resonated test pipes on my 350 and it was hollow. Basically it's just a hollow chamber to allow sound to . . . well . . . resonate. But yeah, we should let George confirm.

George@GTM 05-21-2009 02:52 PM

Correct it is hollow, no performance decrease from a regular test pipe, just better sound!

Great !
Sorry t-ray I thought it had something in the expanded portion! I stand corrected...

No problem man. Good that you sought clarification and didn't buy something you weren't 100% sure on.

Also, I'm sure you've heard that 2k-3k rasp/flutter from the test pipes...How well do these pipes dampen that noise compared to say, the HFCs ??

So I fitted my resonated tp's today. And I can't see how anyone could reuse the ring gasket for the header flange. It simply does not fit over the male part of the gtm flange due to the diameter being larger. I have both brand new rings from nissan and the used ones from stock. And both do not fit. I used ultra copper liquid gasket by permantex. Fingers crossed it doesn't leak.

I know this thread is old but I feel my experience should be notes for interested tp buyers.
