K&N Drop-In Filters

Anyone here try the K&N drop-in air filters? Any gains or just worthless?

I heard sometimes they over oil and it screws with the MAF sensor, any truth to that?

Install for anyone who is interested:
Difficulty 1-10: 1 very easy:tup:

New K&N Filter x 2
http://www.the370z.com/members/cmike...filter-x-2.jpg

There are (2) clips holding each filter tray to each airbox. Just unhook, slide towards the front of the car & pull up.

http://www.the370z.com/members/cmike...back-thats.jpg

Side by side comparison of stock Nissan filter & K&N. The K&N rubber gasket around the filter is slightly thicker than stock but will fit the tray & airbox. Don't worry about which direction the louvers face, it only fits if they are vertical.

Make sure the airbox is clean. I found a lot of old leaves in there. Taking that out alone will get some hp back.

http://www.the370z.com/members/cmike...me-hp-back.jpg

Installation is the reverse. The K&N will be snug, but it does fit. You will have to muscle the clips back on.

Might as well clean the engine bay.:icon17:

Yeah when installers "over-oil" these, they can throw a code for the MAF. When properly re-oilled, they never bother MAF's. You just need to be careful. No horsepower gains, they're just reusable.

Actually someone on here did a dyno before and after and gained 5 hp and tq. Also the air intake with these and the stock box is only 5 - 8 degrees above ambient so they are on par with Long tubes in that area too. They will also improve throttle response some. If you do the drop ins and do the Modshack fang vent DIY you are about as good as the long tubes gains for half the cost. All in all a good mod if you dont want to spend 500+ for an intake.

Cmike2780 06-25-2010 03:52 PM

Any vendors on this site selling this at a good price?

6spd 06-25-2010 04:45 PM

I got them a few months ago and yes, if you are an "aware" person, you will notice a throttle response difference and sound difference. Definitely worth $70ish bucks any day.

I have some that will be at my house and installed by August. Can't wait!! But, I am also installing a Powerhouse Amuse Y Pipe and R1 exhaust with a Cobb AAM tune... so my performance gains will be skewed some...

Jordo! 06-25-2010 05:09 PM

Ah, found it :excited:

http://www.the370z.com/intake-exhaus...-filter-4.html

Hmmm... would like to see data from at least one more car, but that certainly makes me think a drop-in wouldn't be bad for some easy extra ponies for now...

EDIT: Ordered... will keep me amused for now...

6spd 06-25-2010 05:19 PM

Yeah, I mean even if you buy them and only use them for a short time, they were still very cheap and fun for the time.

6spd 06-25-2010 05:21 PM

Oh yeah, just dont buy any other brand filter that are foam or what not. Ive seen some data about air flow and filtration, and K&N is by far superior to brands' filters like HKS and Apexi.

Cmike2780 06-25-2010 05:52 PM

Josh from Stillen is gonna hook me up with good price on a pair of filters. I could always re-sell them if I decide to go with a CAI. 5 hp for something this inexpensive is pretty good. Less headache from the dealer also.

NewYorkJon34 06-25-2010 06:13 PM

I was looking at the intake boxes and it seems like a pain since there is barely enough room to open them.

TreeSemdyZee 06-25-2010 07:29 PM

I bought mine at 370zsource (sponsor). It was the best price I could find. By quite a bit actually.

Do you mean to change the filters? The filter holder unsnaps on top and slides out by itself. Easy as pie... warm apple pie... with vanilla ice cream on top... :tiphat:

Ridiculously easy.
Allow yourself about a minute per side for this job.

NewYorkJon34 06-25-2010 08:15 PM

I know how to install filters, its just the last time I looked there didn't seem like that much room.

Oh definitley -- foam filters offer terrible filtration and if they begin to degrade, you can draw foam particles into the motor :ughdance:

They do offer good flow, however, so for a track only car they might be worthwhile.

Also, interestingly enough, the K&N media offers superior filtration even to the excellent AEM dryflow filters -- at least until they are both PACKED with dirt. Then the AEM flows better -- solution: clean the K&N.

For a cone filter I'd only use K&N or the AEM dryflows, the latter winning out only because they're so easy to clean and no concern regarding overoiling/dirtying MAF sensors.

That said, if the sensor does get gunked: Amazon.com: CRC 05110 Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner - 11 Wt Oz.:…

Once you open the hood, there's about 2 metres of clearance for the filter holders to slide out.
Loads of room!

Haven't tried it yet, but doesn't look too complicated

6spd 06-25-2010 09:14 PM

Its almost as easy as pulling your oil dipstick out and putting it back in, twice!

It takes my dip stick more than two times.

GZ3 06-25-2010 10:05 PM

theses are in my future, i will post a huge DIY with a million photos for everyone

NewYorkJon34 06-25-2010 11:43 PM

I only glanced at it a few times, I take another look at the air boxes when I get a chance. If anything I'd get these to tide me over till I get my Stillen S/C

Im not 100% sure what you mean, but if you mean what I think you mean :bowrofl:

J-BoneZ 06-26-2010 08:42 AM

Just ordered a pair of these yesterday with the Cobb post maf hoses to go along with them.

j.arnaldo 06-26-2010 09:37 AM

Personal experience: 1. I was getting 12-13 days to a tankfull; now I'm getting 14-15 days. 2. The torque band improved at the low end. Well worth a $60 investment!

Before you all freak at how cheap j.arnaldo got his, remember that his car only takes one.

I dropped about $90 on mine (2).

Oh, for anyone doubting how easy it is... a better pic from the owner's manual on this...

Super easy and a smart design, you can change them out really quickly!

i got mine for about $39 each from Forged.
Combined with the Cobb tubes, my intake on the cheap was right around $210.

6spd 06-26-2010 03:08 PM

Got mine on sale at 370zsource for $70ish plus shipping, but that was a while ago.

Zsteve 06-26-2010 03:08 PM

The only real difference between the stock intake and the long tubes is the size of the MAF section. The long tubes are slightly larger and cause the car to run a little more lean to add a few HP over the stock setup.

You have two choices to match this: One, ask Modshack for his MAF sections which are slightly larger. Two get the AAM tune with the Cobb and have your AF adjusted to get more power. Once you get a tune the larger MAF section really doesnt matter any more from what I understand. You wont need both.

Jordo! 07-02-2010 01:26 PM

Just got mine today... but it's raining :(

They're a bit smaller than I thought they would be...

Cmike2780 07-02-2010 01:33 PM

Got mine today also. I'm gonna install them as soon as I get home.

Jordo! 07-02-2010 01:45 PM

Stopped raining enough to install -- took literally 5 minutes.

Other than the marginal PITA to pop the clips back on (typical for factory airboxes), it was incredilbly easy to get to and to install.

Tray type design

Cmike2780 07-02-2010 06:17 PM

The rubber gaskets around the K&N were a lot thicker than stock. You really have to stretch the clips to get them to lock. I really should have checked the airboxes more often. I found a handful of leaves in each one.... I thought she was running a little sluggish. After cleaning and dropping the new filters in, I noticed better throttle response and a noticeable increase on power. Not a whole lot, but noticeable. This is one of the easiest air filter install ever. Coming from an RX-8, which was near impossible, this was a breeze. I highly recommend.

yeah, rx8's suck the big one, especially servicing them...:icon14:

yes, to change RX8 air filter was not a easy task. I used to have a VR 8.

I still have scars on my knuckles from changing the Rx8 oil filter.
