K&N Drop-In Filters

Anyone here try the K&N drop-in air filters? Any gains or just worthless?

I heard sometimes they over oil and it screws with the MAF sensor, any truth to that?

Install for anyone who is interested:
Difficulty 1-10: 1 very easy:tup:

New K&N Filter x 2

There are (2) clips holding each filter tray to each airbox. Just unhook, slide towards the front of the car & pull up.

Side by side comparison of stock Nissan filter & K&N. The K&N rubber gasket around the filter is slightly thicker than stock but will fit the tray & airbox. Don't worry about which direction the louvers face, it only fits if they are vertical.

Make sure the airbox is clean. I found a lot of old leaves in there. Taking that out alone will get some hp back.

Installation is the reverse. The K&N will be snug, but it does fit. You will have to muscle the clips back on.

Might as well clean the engine bay.:icon17:

Yeah when installers "over-oil" these, they can throw a code for the MAF. When properly re-oilled, they never bother MAF's. You just need to be careful. No horsepower gains, they're just reusable.

Actually someone on here did a dyno before and after and gained 5 hp and tq. Also the air intake with these and the stock box is only 5 - 8 degrees above ambient so they are on par with Long tubes in that area too. They will also improve throttle response some. If you do the drop ins and do the Modshack fang vent DIY you are about as good as the long tubes gains for half the cost. All in all a good mod if you dont want to spend 500+ for an intake.

Any vendors on this site selling this at a good price?

I got them a few months ago and yes, if you are an "aware" person, you will notice a throttle response difference and sound difference. Definitely worth $70ish bucks any day.

I have some that will be at my house and installed by August. Can't wait!! But, I am also installing a Powerhouse Amuse Y Pipe and R1 exhaust with a Cobb AAM tune... so my performance gains will be skewed some...

Ah, found it :excited:

Hmmm... would like to see data from at least one more car, but that certainly makes me think a drop-in wouldn't be bad for some easy extra ponies for now...

EDIT: Ordered... will keep me amused for now...

6spd 06-25-2010 05:19 PM

Yeah, I mean even if you buy them and only use them for a short time, they were still very cheap and fun for the time.

6spd 06-25-2010 05:21 PM

Oh yeah, just dont buy any other brand filter that are foam or what not. Ive seen some data about air flow and filtration, and K&N is by far superior to brands' filters like HKS and Apexi.

Josh from Stillen is gonna hook me up with good price on a pair of filters. I could always re-sell them if I decide to go with a CAI. 5 hp for something this inexpensive is pretty good. Less headache from the dealer also.

I was looking at the intake boxes and it seems like a pain since there is barely enough room to open them.

TreeSemdyZee 06-25-2010 07:29 PM

I bought mine at 370zsource (sponsor). It was the best price I could find. By quite a bit actually.

Do you mean to change the filters? The filter holder unsnaps on top and slides out by itself. Easy as pie... warm apple pie... with vanilla ice cream on top... :tiphat:
