Finally Got my exhaust! HKS Hi-Power Ti Exhaust (many Pics, Video inside AK370Z)

:woot: Finally after a long year, I got my exhaust. I was getting tired of stock exhaust sound. I put on more than 19,000 miles on stock exhaust  . It was time for something new

As some knows, I wanted a exhaust that's not to loud but still has the nice aftermarket sound to it. I wanted to carry conversation with my passenger without raising my voice. My other criteria for aftermarket exhaust were

a. Burnt Titanium tips (preferably adjustable)
b. Good ground clearance (living in East Coast sucks)
c. V exhaust design (kinda like F.I. or HKS Hi Power where you can see the exhaust coming out like "V" instead of straight like other designs).
d. Exhaust that not only sounds good, but looks good too.

60mm Piping
120mm Tip

Surprisingly, this HKS Hi Power Ti exhaust has all these features. It has adjustable burnt Titanium tips and unique design. I also liked the way it sounded. Also, it has much better ground clearance than similarly designed exhausts. Thanks to all existing HKS Hi Power owners that helped me out with their video and pm reply (video: Raziman, review: ilive2win, JB-370z and few others that I can't recall at the moment.)

Please note, I'm not 100% right now. 4 of my wisdom teeth were removed on Tuesday. I'm going to post some pictures and some videos now. This is just to give you guys an idea how the exhaust is. Later this week (or next week), I'll have a better videos (or a single put together video with everything) Also, best possible videos as I was shooting the videos in school zone :ugh:.

Packaging and Shipping:
Thanks to AJ (from ECS) for quick shipping. I ordered on Monday and on Wed it was here. Packaging was top notch from HKS. I think the Exhaust was put inside the box first and situated securely. Then, plastic bags were filled with foam with contour of the exhaust

http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/s...z/DSC03598.jpg
That's a huge box. Even bigger than me!

http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/s...z/DSC03635.jpg
Very well packaged. I guess I would pack well too if I ship my product across the WORLD! ;)

Dyno Dilemma
So after going to various different shops in my area, I find out that there's no dyno shop around. The closest one is 40 miles away and it's a Mustang turning shop (and the dyno in the backyard :ugh:). I really wanted to go to Jtune Performance in DE (also a sponsor here on the forum) but my exhaust didn't fit inside the car properly to go on a 100 mile trip :(. Basically this shop does ONLY Mustang stuff. When I arrived I saw many 5.0 in the lot.

During our Dyno, for some weird reason, the tach bounced up back and forth after 6500 and dyno had a lot of "noise" in the graph(as per operator). I don't know what these means. I simply wanted to get a Dyno and I was okay with whatever. So, here's the Dyno documents. I think something went wrong. I got same data (HP/TQ) before and after the install! :wtf: Oh well, time for a different shop next time :eekdance:. They are not used to dynoing these kind of cars anyway. The shop owner (Craig) did try his best but he couldn't figure out why the tach bounces back and forth after 6500 RPM.

I'll share some pictures of the Dyno shop here:

Getting it installed:
Simply drove to the nearest exhaust shop and dropped my Z there. Then put the exhaust in dads car and dropped that off too. My old stock exhaust was so rusted around the bolts, they had to cut it! :(. Maybe that's because of all the snow driving last winter? Oh well, time to move on.

Installation was very straight forward. It didn't took the tech long time at all. Very easy to instructions.

Sound Clip Comparison:

I absolutely love the sound. It's quiet when you're just cruising or in 5th or 6th gear. But it comes back alive as soon as you downshift. It just screams all the way to the redline without any rasp. Also, it'll probably get even more mellow after burn in. I'm very satisfied.

Overall, I am very happy. I have waited way too long for this. I apologize if I posted too many pictures but I'm just excited. It's sounds exotic. Exactly what I wanted. I'll update this thread with new videos (when exhaust is burned in, fly by etc). This is me right now = :happydance:

Btw, they sent me this cool (raised) decal with the exhaust. Where should I put it?

AK, how about you provide us with a straight shot of the setup from there rear, so we can get a good look at that bad boy.

takayuki 05-21-2010 09:07 PM

i have the same exhaust! absolutely love it! I put the decal on the plate that's welded on the midpipe in front of the diff. You can see it in the picture with the rear swaybar

excellent thread AK, very informative and interesting, sounds great. Just curious, did you ever do a baseline dyno to see how much you gained?

kevin.z 05-21-2010 09:20 PM

performance wise, I really hope this exhaust is on par with F.I ones. Dynos!

Danny3.7 05-21-2010 09:40 PM

Congrats AK! nice license plate video editing skills! :p It looks and sounds fantastic and the tips look huge!

nice choice, I bought HKS hi power exhaust for my g37 coupe. but when i was installing it.. there was issue with fitting it with 4WAS.. I didnt want to adjust it so i just send it back and got full refund.. but HKS was my first choice!!

phelan 05-22-2010 12:34 AM

mmmm i love it, nice one AK!

as for the decal, who cares where you put it? put that bad boy on and unleash the extra +20 hp / +10 tq it gives you :roflpuke2:

fairladyZ34 05-22-2010 12:37 AM

put the decal where the nismo decal would go if it were a nismo

NewlyIMPORTed 05-22-2010 12:58 AM

do you still have the silencers in?

labk888 05-22-2010 01:17 AM

Very nice! Congrats on the new exhaust!

Boost_lee 05-22-2010 02:14 AM

AK - great choice on the exhaust, sounds and looks great.

On the rev and launch video, I thought you were heading straight for that boat on the way back! Damn wide angle lenses :P

red6spd 05-22-2010 08:44 AM

Thats a really cool looking exhaust. Nice man. Everytime I see one of those vids of a car drving away and the camera staying in the same spot I'm all ways ready for someone to come by and just grab it and run lol. But then I guess we would never see the vids.

Westwood 05-22-2010 09:55 AM

man i miss that sound :( had the same set up with my 350z with borla headers, gotta stack up some money so i can get that sound back... soooo jeaalouuss lol :D

Jeffblue 05-22-2010 10:18 AM

really nice! btw, what are the big canister things next to the mufflers?

chuckd05 05-22-2010 10:21 AM

All HKS systems have those on top of the muffler... I'm not sure of the idea behind them but common with HKS systems...

I would put that decal on your toolbox in your garage haha... Leave the car nice and clean!

Exhaust is tits btw... burnt ti tips looks great on the blue

theDreamer 05-22-2010 10:49 AM

Congrats on the exhaust AK.
I think the extra cans are for the "tone" of the exhaust and help create that specific sound.

kenchan 05-22-2010 10:53 AM

I think those are there to maintain back pressure for low-end torque and response time.

ilive2win 05-22-2010 10:53 AM

glad you went with the hks and im glad i could help you out. the dynos are weird though. im going to get mine dynoed and tuned june 15th so im curious what im going to make. congrats AK and i hope you like it!

fairladyZ34 05-22-2010 10:59 AM

i think i remember hear that those cans next to the mufflers act as resonators (Helmholtz perhaps) at low RPMs to help noise and scavenging but are bypassed at higher RPMs when it is better to have the exhaust free flow as quickly as possible.

SoCal 370Z 05-22-2010 10:59 AM

Hey...that looks just like the side of my house...and the box that UPS delivered just before it went missing! If you look closely on the box it states: This exhaust is specially made for installation on a 2009 Pearl White 370Z. Dammit AK!

JB-370z 05-22-2010 11:16 AM

Glad you went with the HKS AK. I love mine and I am sure you will love yours. The note will change a bit after about 2-3k miles, a little more low end rummble and tons more of that pop, pop, pop sound when you barely touch the peddle on idle. When I almost hit red line and shift this thing sounds like some kind of high end exotic car pure amazing, made me fall in love with the VQ37 all over agian. I love it. To bad I need to sell it to someone that wants to pick it up in Texas becuase I am going turbo. I might do a custom HKS turbo exhaust though :) HKS FTW, oh and I love that d@m go pro you got, I got to get one for sure.

G Fo12ce 05-22-2010 01:35 PM

Awesome exhaust AK and I'm not just saying that cuz I have it too . I'll be doing a post about it soon as it's long overdue but I will share a few things here. I also like how it has a nice tone but is not overbearing. It makes me think it will still sound reasonable with cats on it later. I think some people don't consider that when they listen to sound clips of the cat back alone then put cats on to find it's annoying.

In terms of power I'm going to say it's on par with the others. My car gained a few HP over the true dual that comes on the Nismo stock, making just over 300 to the wheels peak. It would make a more dramatic difference over the regular exhaust on the Z.

It doesn't come with silencers, the bolts you see on the side is to adjust the tip in or out more.

Those extra canisters are tuned resonators. The are there to reduce the amount of rasp inherent on the VQ engine somewhere between 3k-5k rpm. Just recently HKS changed the muffler section to fine tune those also.

As far as tips for Nismo owners (which I will expand on in my post) There is another tip they use on the G37 version that is longer that if you really want you can buy seperate (since the Nismo bumper comes out more). It's not really necessary and is a matter of taste, up to you. Also on the drivers side rear section (muffler section) there is an additional hanger bracket that must be removed to avoid the exhaust from hanging crooked. HKS had made supplement instructions now for Nismo onwers . I don't want to seem like im thread jacking though so I'll save it for later. Again sweet exhaust AK!

Baseline was the same HP/TQ. Hence we are thinking something was up (on the dyno). Past 6500 RPM, the tach needle was bouncing (and dyno registered a lot of "noise") :(.

HKS always stands by their products. When HKS first made these Hi Power exhausts, they used a base (non sports model) as a test mule. So, there was a small issue with midpipe . HKS then sent FREE updated midpipe to all the owners that installed the first gen exhaust!
