Yes the gas still does escape out of the gap, but it doesn't bother me because some of the gas still goes through the muffler.
When you are cruising around the wind under the car will get rid of the exhaust gases so it won't be stationary under the car. When at idle the amount coming out through the gap is insignificant. I'm not worried about fumes or anything.
