Drop-in K&N filters - a waste of time/money?

I'd like opinions on the following question. Given that there are no CAIs on the market yet for the 370, does it make sense to replace the paper air filters with K&Ns for the time being? Or is it a waste of money that won't really make any difference?

You do know that the stock intake is a cold air intake already. CAI's have proven to lose power on the 350/G35. I dont know what they do for the G37.

on the HR 350z motor the drop ins were good for about 4hp on the dyno in my buddies car ive got them in my GTR and someone recently dynoed them on a GTR and saw no real gains

but regardless of gains you are getting more airflow and they last a long time even without reoiling them

so they arnt a waste i dont think

They should be good for some very mild gains. The stock intakes flow fairly well and you won't likely see decent gains until you uncork the exhaust if the G37 is any indication. Nissan is leaving less and less on the table for the aftermarket. I will be saving my money for a true dual exhaust system with high flow cats, then a flash and then intakes. The sound gained from open element intakes on the G37 is incredible.

$127.18 for the pair, incl sales tax (6%). I just called the local Autozone and they said they'll have them by tomorrow.

Really? I thought that the Injens did well on the HR. I guess the vvel on the vhr is so finely tuned that aftermarket companies need to really put out a product that can actually deliver. I do have high hopes for the stillen. Also I hope short rams can make power as well like those from JWT. I know that most intakes dont make much power...we all just get them for the noise:tup:

Cool, let us know what you think after you've run them for a week or two.

ya the only intake to make power so far for the HR with out a tune is the stillen gen 3 long tube intake. But inen is coming out whit another try

^ Do u think the VVEL on the VHR's do anything to the ECU when adding aftermarket intakes on the car? I mean that could cause a drop in hp from what people are seeing right?

Minicobra1 01-16-2009 02:25 AM

Here they are for $83.90 a pair

No... CIA will not affect that. The air intake temperature sensor comes after the filters. Meaning, the temperature of the air will not mess with the computer. It would be no different than going from cold weather to hot weather. The AIT senors will adjust accordingly.

K&Ns are a waste of money, IMO. If you're going for track use, you MAY get 1/100th of second better times, but they won't be as consistent. I got more consistent times with paper filters than I did with the K&N. Also, they're REALLY made for off-road use.

Not all oil-based filters are good.
