Fast Intentions 18' exhaust - too loud

Hello to all,

Im using FI exhaust with 18 resonators. After two years and 30000 miles im tired due to loudness and little drone. Its too loud for me - mostly between 1800 and 2800rpm ( very loud and deep tone ). I decided to switch to more quiet and drone free exhaust but I dont want to put OEM back. FI has some really nice gains.
I have done some research and found that HKS Hi Power should be good option for me.
Has anybody heard FI and HKS and can confirm that HKS is more quiet and drone free? Or maybe there is better option?
I wanted OEM Nismo CBE but its impossible to buy used one in Europe.

Sorry for my English.

Regards,
Chris

I had the same FI cbe #95 and after 5 years

I got the HKS, it's really quiet up until you get to 4k then it comes to life.

I took a trip from Southern California to New Mexico and the whole way it was nice low tone with absolutely no drone what so ever.

It does not sound totally quiet at idle like the stock exhaust so imo a good alternative choice for a more performance without the sacrifice of drone or raspy exhaust.

I do have hfc's btw so it's will be more quiet and feel less responsive if your on stock cats.

Breadz 06-11-2016 05:41 PM

Other then stock and nismo i dont know about anything quieter then fi 18 inch
:confused::confused:

Nixin 06-11-2016 08:07 PM

Just crank up the music, it will mute out the exhaust.

barncobob 06-11-2016 08:11 PM

had FI 18" for a month, too loud and droning in that rpm range, got stock Nismo exhaust and all is good.

Chris (OP)

Having had a few custom exhausts on a few vehicles, I understand drone and how subjective sound is to different people.

On my nismo, first I swapped out the OEM cats for Berk HFCs more really more for performance than sound. Still, I did think the OEM nismo exhaust was way too quiet.

Looking for a simple solution, I installed the TopSpeed axle back. This sounded incredible...many different notes available depending on gear and RPMs with a great burble thrown in. Problem was in the cab just too loud. I could never just relax and drive- it was always loud. Maybe like your FI? This may also been because I had the Berk HFCs?

Read here on the forum about good experience with the CNT Racing cat back. They said zero drone (even with test pipes) and showed pictures after three years which still looked like new. I now have this installed and like it. Even with the HFCs, NO drone and driving I can make it relatively quiet or get on it and make it loud.

The only thing I'm not crazy about is the hiss or whatever you call it that comes along with having the HFCs. Not a big deal.

Nothing against any other exhaust brands, just my experience, in case it helps. Also, here is link which might be interesting to you:
http://www.the370z.com/intake-exhaus...w-w-video.html

It looks a lot like the HKS with the helmholz cannisters to take care of drone.

Good luck with your search!

I definitely miss my cnt exhaust

Just ordered my FI before reading this post. Hope I can live with it. Had a chance to listen to another member with the FI and stationary didn't seem bad. We'll see how I feel after it's been on for a couple of months.

Do like the idea of the HP increase and a little deeper exhaust note.

Zoom370z 06-12-2016 04:34 PM

Anyone here have FI exhaust for sale ?

My FI exhaust should be arriving in the next two weeks. I ordered 12" resonators with CF mufflers. I'm hoping it won't be too loud with the stock cats. But honestly the "Z" is a sports car and isn't expected to purr like a kitten. And maybe the added exhaust note will drown out the road noise?

Cegla 06-13-2016 01:46 PM

Thanks for all replies.
I will try to find HKS, or Nismo OEM. CNT is not available at this time.

I can sell mine Fast Intentions exhaust with 12 and 18 resonators to someone from Europe. Shipping to US will be probably very expensive.

gbrettin 06-13-2016 03:56 PM

I'm not sure if you will go this route, but if you add turbos they will stop the drone.

dvo 06-13-2016 06:01 PM

Tanabe is another choice if you want a quiet exhaust.

somms 06-16-2016 01:27 PM

Honestly, I love how loud my FI 18" exhaust is. That's sort of why I bought it in the first place.

I think you all may need diapers. I have lth on a 12inch res and its way to quiet

Agree 😀

Zoom370z 06-16-2016 04:35 PM

When you say loud do you mean in the cabin ?

Yes in the cabin - outside is great.

lol i don't have mine yet, but after owning the Z w/ just HFCs for a while i'm gonna have to agree. Then again i literally go to the range just to smell gunpowder and hear sh#t go bang.

You need to sound dampen your car.

I have a one inch thick foam mat in my hatch area and haven't noticed much of an improvement. Do you recommend any stick on products?

Zoom370z 06-16-2016 07:46 PM

Dynomat or and second skin or even the stuff from lowes or home depot that works great

I was thinking of going with motordyne over fast intentions because from what I heard about fast intentions being to quiet, vs motordyne was loud. But now im not sure? I've never heard either one in person just on videos, Is it really that loud? I wanted the fast Intentions non resonated version.

That is it. Start with the trunk and if that does not help, do the floors and doors.

Personally I like to hear all the noises of the road and the car. Gives me that connected feel. If I wanted a quite ride, I would have bought a sedan of some kind (never, never, never..........).

I've heard that a foam layer is necessary to dramatically reduce noise. I've used the stuff from lowes (peel and seal IIRC) and it worked great for dampening the trunk with subwoofers.

Zoom370z 06-16-2016 08:46 PM

Yes peel and seal works just clean any area where you are going to apply.

I have dynamat in my trunk but this reduced exhaust volume in cabin just a little but noise from road/tires has almost completely gone.

Hi Cegla. Pardon my ignorance, but what is dynamat and where can it be purchased?
Thanks.

Fast Intentions 18' exhaust - too loud

Race cars are supposed to be loud. Volvo makes some very fast cars that are quite safe and extremely quiet, just FYI.

TBatt 06-17-2016 12:35 PM

Stillen CBE is another choice. Many forum members say it is too quiet.

If you are afraid of it being to loud or to quiet i suggest going with fi 12 inch, down the road you can make it slightly louder with res high flow cats or super loud with long tube headers.
After following somebody driving my car i think non res carbon fi is perfect. Planning on getting res high flow cats next to keep it as close to as it is right now.

370zmaxima 06-17-2016 02:40 PM

I have FI non-resonated exhaust and HFC's not to loud for me. But I am 52, hell maybe I cant hear. lol

I had the beluga resonated axle back exhaust and that was to loud for my taste, but i also have installed berks non resonated hfcs

Finally I ordered 2016 HKS made Nismo OEM exhaust from my Nissan dealer. Should be more quiet but still better overall than stock - I hope so.

I like the Nismos volume with test pipes, just wish there was a little more 'burble'

I have HFC in my garage for almost year. I wonder how much they can increase Nismo stock exhaust loudness? I will probably install them after exhuast change.
