tanabe CBE

just picked up my new PW 14 touring w/sport mt yest. :happydance::happydance::happydance:so many 14 and 15s around that great deals can be had. heck even the 16s are being discounted aggressively. anyways, i must say it was hard for me to keep it under 4k rpms on my drive home of 300 miles. but i will be good for the break in period.

i know i want a more aggressive exhaust note so after looking long and hard at diff reviews and listening to sound clips, i think im going with the tanabe touring medallion cbe.

does anyone out there have just the cbe with no other mods? if anyone has just the cbe, please post a sound clip.

i would prefer to not go the test pipe or hfc route for poss inspection failure and need for tuning. im wondering how close i can get to this with just the cbe. this is the sound im after.

if anyone can post a clip or opine on this, i would appreciate it.

YouTube and Google are your friends... Enjoy your new car and welcome.

fwskyracer 11-22-2015 05:54 PM

thanks for the welcome.

ive googled and youtubed this to death - listened to and watched easily over few hundred - and all sound clips are of Zs modded with things in addition to the tanabe CBE. for ex, the video i posted has TP. im not at all certain i wanna go down that path, hence my request.

ive spent many many hours listening to clips but its hard for me to take the 1k+ plunge without knowing exactly what i would be getting into...

if anyone can help here, i would greatly appreciate it.

OP, that video you posted is actually CBE only. Uploader clarifies that in the comments.

I do think the Tanabe has a nice clean sound. If you're going to stray away from TP's and HFC's I say look into an MXP or Bassani system as well. I have the latter and couldn't be happier.

fwskyracer 11-22-2015 08:47 PM

thanks RanRich. i never saw the comments on youtube... i see it now. i do recall seeing the uploader commenting here on the forum that he has it set up with the test pipes. perhaps that was after the video was shot?

thanks also for you suggestions. i just took did a quick search and found some video of them. your reason for suggesting those 2 in particular?

it's really hard to describe what i want. cuz im not really sure until i hear something and know then that i like it. i do think tanabe is what i want based on the video. i know i dont want loud for loudness sake. i passed on a Z with meistershaft because there was no way i can live with that beast, as fun as it was to drive it.

thanks.

I would assume so, the Z in that exhaust definitely has stock cats. TP's would be a good amount louder and provide a more raw sound. Only complaint about the Tanabe is the Y-pipe. General rule of best power/flow is Y<H<X.

But I completely understand what you mean about being particular haha, I spent months researching systems!

I went with the Bassani because I too don't plan on messing with the cats. It has a more progressive design (2.25" cat to resonators, 2.5" resonators back) giving it a better flow from stock cats (2"), as compared to the standard of 2.5" all the way through.

MXP also provides a great noise with stock cats, but has an H-pipe rather than an X-pipe crossover. However I ended up opting out because I wanted the X crossover and liked the ARK/Fast Intentions style muffler layout more.

Here is a link to my Bassani review:

Here is a review of the MXP:

My Z is my daily driver so I didn't want over the top loud, but was really looking to bring out more of the car's character. Hope I was able to help.

i pulled the trigger on the tanabe yest and its already here!

i will prob install on fri and will post my impressions for those who are considering the tanabe touring medallions.

Nice choice OP! I chose Tanabe ( Tanabe was one of the 5 of course) over my other top 5 favorite JDM exhaust companies from Japan. Make sure to install the Y-pipe too (stock cats only for me). I couldn't be happier with my selection of exhaust for my dream car.:happydance:

So you got the car on Sunday and you already have the Tanabe? Nice work! Keep us posted on how you like it. When your finished ripping up and down the block, maybe you can post up a sound clip.

thanks streetlife. did you do the y pipe at the same time or did you add on after the exhaust install? its another $400... i figured i can always add if im not satisfied with the sound. im wondering how big a diff y pipe will make. can you describe the difference? i know it might be hard to convey but would like to get your impressions so i can make a more informed decision.

having said all the above, if i can duplicate the sound from the youtube clip, i will be very very happy.

hemingway, i knew exactly what i wanted to do before i got the car. i didnt decide on which exhaust as the deal couldve fallen apart with the dealer only quoting a trade value on my car sight unseen. i drove 300 miles to pick up the only 14 PW touring/sport non tech 6sp in the country i think. i was happy they didnt jerk me on the trade as i wouldve blown them off if they wanted to play games and knock off 100 for this and 200 for that. all went smooth on pick up day.

ive looked at so many exhausts it makes me dizzy thinking about it. so ive been ready for a long time. i just needed to decide on which of the three finalists i was gonna go with. no sense in delaying this... i wanna enjoy it ASAP! my neighbor will help me with the install on fri. i will be sure to post some clips . not sure if im gonna be able to sleep thu night....

I have the Tanabe with Y-pipe. This car sounds great with any decent exhaust set-up, and this one is no different. It's quiet in the lower rpm range, and has a nice howl through the mid-range, until the roar of the motor overtakes the exhaust sound in the upper rpms. It has a real nice cold-start growl, too.

The gains I noticed were minor, but definitely there. Sorry, but I don't have any sound clips. The only other modification I have are the Z1 post-MAF tubes.

No doubt, get the y-pipe too. I wish I had the y-pipe back when i took delivery after ordering my girl, i had my tanabe mid and muffler section done the first week when the PDI was being completed. When I decided on Tanabe the y-pipe was on backorder and Tanabe let me know that from Japan, amazing customer service as always. It was worth the extra $100 I had to pay to have it installed. The y-pipe makes the exhaust louder (not too loud though), more refined, and more power through the whole rev range.:happydance:

well its now been about a month and im finally over the break in period so heres the clip to my tanabe CBE. im happy with it overall. its kinda discreet and it gives me the note i was after. hard to tell what it actually sounds like to others when inside the car but i hope to do a launch and flyby when i get a chance so i know what it sounds for myself.
