Intake crank vent hose?

I hope i am saying the right part but on the intakes there is one on each tube that connects using a pcv hose. What is the purpose of this

I hope i am saying the right part but on the intakes there is one on each tube that connects using a pcv hose. What is the purpose of this hose and what happens if it were to disconnect while driving? I ask because during install the driver side tube had to be twisted to fit.
