test pipes test pipes test pipes

ok, so i'm trying to understand the difference in the amount difference between test pipes, but i just can't seem to justify it. i understand resonated will be more then the non res ones. what i can't understand why is top speed $150 brand new, invidia $200 brand new, z1 $270 brand new, and so on.

if they all do the same thing, why such a difference in price? i'd understand if it was a few dollars difference.

can anyone shed any bit of light on this???? it's driving me crazy :icon14: :icon14: :icon14: :icon14: :icon14:

Quality and R&D is probably the number 1 factor/s. Look at Motordyne, it's $500+ for test pipes. I achieved 6-7HP and 5-8TQ just adding them -- the rasp is minimal -- product is a thing of beauty from welds to design.

njobe89 02-24-2015 02:05 PM

i can understand the res ones being a little more expensive, but it seems all test pipes will give you 7-10hp and some tq. i just can't see the reason to pay $500 instead of $200 if i will get the same product. or maybe i'm just crazy, idk lol

Some people swear by, "you get what you pay for" and seem to think paying more will produce a better product I guess. Z1 is on back order with there test pipes, but I'm going with them because there the go to guys here and I live local and just a few clicks away from there shop.

FPenvy 02-24-2015 02:40 PM

could always pay $275 and get Fast Intentions TPs.

amazing sound, amazing quality, and the best customer service all for a nice price.

:tiphat:

Resonated test pipes reduces the rasp & hiss that are inherent with regular test pipes. I paid more for the extra ding dongs so I don't have to deal with any unwanted noises. And I didn't pay $500, got it second hand with less than a thousand miles on them courtesy of the classified section ;)

they seem to be, but about a week or two ago, can't remember who posted on zatlanta page that the test pipes they had from z1 one broke at the welding point.

there's plenty on here who do the same as well. it is a great product.

their products sold me on the sound and quality of their work. the bonus was when the car was strapped to the dyno lol

not sure if there would be the 10-12 week wait if just ordering test pipes from them. CBE is 10-12 week wait based on the demand and everything being hand built.

i sort of want to go with the res ones, not sure how bad the rasp/hiss would be with the non res one with my stillen cbe

not sure how those two sound together but the hiss will happen no matter which brand or setup you choose. the hiss comes from removing the cats.

rasp however the res version will help relieve some of that.

i'm wondering too, the stillen cbe is not loud at all. has a deep rumble at about 3k rpm but doesn't get loud

TPs should give you the added volume. res or nonres just determines drone. the resonators don't really drop the volume too much.

not sure if I know of anyone running TPs and the stillen cbe personally. im sure there are a few out there.

i tried to find videos on here and on youtube but couldn't find any. not many run the stillen cbe

brancky3 02-25-2015 08:22 AM

I have non res and a Nismo catback, the hiss is pretty apparent at full throttle under 4-5k RPM, but you won't hear it up top. I don't really get any rasp or drone.

Edit: How much louder is the Stillen CBE compared to Nismo? I'd be happy to make a video of my car, just tell me what you want to hear

the hiss should only be happening on decel.

if you hear a hiss during accel you may have a leak. check your gaskets, connections, and tighten all bolts.

Nick M 02-25-2015 08:26 AM

A lot of it just has to do with economies of scale.

If a co partners with a mass distributor or overseas manufacturer, they can afford to mass produce exhaust parts on the cheap, buying bulk materials, and using different automated manufacturing processes. They will tend to be on the lesser end of quality - maybe the welds don't last, maybe they do, maybe its a lower quality steel.

Someone like the guys at Fast Intentions do low volume, handmade stuff. They can't afford to sell stuff for nothing, they wouldn't be able to stay in business. But you have a co and people to turn to if you have any problems and you're supporting a US business that supports our hobby and industry. If you have problems with ebay test pipes, you're probably out of luck.

I ordered FI test pipes, expecting in early April.

Will do. I haven't heard any hiss on decel, so that's a good thing I guess

just remember that's video from an iphone so the sound is louder than that in person.

my straight pipe videos are proof of that lol they sound semi-tame in videos and in real life you'll be holding your ears.

i'm in the process of deciding to find/buy a decibel meter to see where its actually at sound wise.

maxed out any ihpone app I've tried since the mic on the iphone only reads up to 105 I believe.
